"What's most amazing about the GS is that its versatility costs it
nothing. Matter of fact, in some situations the GS can actually
outperform BMW's more specialized machines, beating them at their
own game. On a twisty road, for example, the GS is the best
handling sportbike that BMW has yet built, able to knife around
corners with the kind of ease and precision that other Beemers
can't muster." Cycle World, July 1988
For consignment, a 1988 BMW R100GS motorcycle showing 3,927 miles,
but the true miles are unknown. This fully restored R100GS has been
featured at the Simeone Foundation Automotive Museum and three
times on the field at the Radnor Concours d'Elegance outside of
Philadelphia.
Exterior
Part street bike, part trail bike, the BMW combines many elements
that Cycle World recognized and praised. Alpine White fenders set
the color palette which continues on the cowl and short windscreen
adorned with contrasting blue trim that evokes the GS moniker. The
upgraded Dakar 9.8 gallon gas tank retains BMW colors and emblems,
and is a fantastic match for the red vinyl flat saddle. White
handle guards have been added as have yellow fog lights up front.
The exterior is in excellent condition save for one scuff, and a
Pelican hard case has been added to the rear and includes emergency
supplies.
Functionality
The instrument panel consists of a speedometer, bold and colorful
indicator lights, and a tachometer, all offset from the center.
Ahead of that cluster is a BMW Motorrad navigation unit. Thumb
controls are brightly colored on each side of the handlebars and
are easily accessed.
Drivetrain
The 980cc boxer 2 cylinder engine features dual Bing one barrel
carburetors, wedgetail ignition, and a horsepower rating of 56
horsepower with a shaft driven drivetrain. The stock style dual
exhaust is now stainless and brakes are configured as front disc,
(Brembo), and rear drums. Chrome wire wheels feature the unique
mounting of the spokes outboard of the tire's bead, preventing any
air leaks and affording the ability to run tubeless tires.
Suspension consists of a telescopic fork in front and the much
touted paralever adjustable preload in back which allows the
gearcase to float independently of the swingarm.
Cycle World continues in 1988: "Put all that together and you've
got a motorcycle that's not quite like anything else in existence.
You could make a case that the GS is the world's most versatile
motorcycle, that its capabilities and fuel range enable it to go
places that no other bike would dare venture. For us, we'll simply
say that in an incredibly wide variety of situations, the GS
overall is the best BMW we've ever tested. That's saying a lot,
since we've tested some mighty fine BMWs over the years."
This bike represents a unique opportunity. Between 1987 and 1994,
just over 34,000 R100GS's were produced, but when was the last time
you saw one? Here's one that's been restored and balanced and a
veteran of some noteworthy showings.
