OF THE MOST STYLISH & COVETED OF ALL 1960s AUTOMOBILESREADY TO OWN,
COLLECT, SHOW & ENJOY Featuring fabulous projectile-like styling,
the 1961-63 Ford Thunderbird stands as one of the most glamorous
generations of the beloved T-Bird. Designed by Ford stylist Bud
Kaufman, the Sports Roadster option package raised the bar with a
neat fiberglass tonneau cover that fitted over the rear-seat area
to create the visual impression of a two-seat roadster with a very
long rear deck. Racy faired-in and upholstered headrests,
reminiscent of the era's racing cars, occupied the leading edge of
the tonneau, just above the bucket seatbacks. Factory-available
with the tonneau cover for 1962-63, the Thunderbird Sports Roadster
also included a set of handsome Kelsey-Hayes chrome wire wheels and
deletion of the normal rear-fender skirts.According to printed
sources, the Sports Roadster priced at about $5,500 when new and
production was limited with just 1,427 factory-built for 1962, plus
another 455 for 1963, followed by a handful sold from Ford dealers
for 1964. Today, with their projectile-like "Jet Age" styling and
brawny 390 CI V-8 powerplants, these sleek Thunderbirds continue to
rank among the most desirable and collectible Thunderbirds ever
produced. From 1962, the Thunderbird Sports Roadster experience
truly lived up to the model name, with an optional high-performance
M-Code 390 CI V-8 engine developing 340 HP with triple Holley
two-barrel carburetors.Produced at Ford Motor Company's exclusive
Thunderbird factory in Wixom, Michigan during September 1962 and
finished in Rangoon Red, this 1962 Ford Thunderbird is a
factory-original Sports Roadster that carried a basic $5,539 MSRP
when new. Equipped with power brakes and power steering, the
Thunderbird was further equipped with power windows, power driver
and passenger seats, a pushbutton AM radio, windshield washers, an
outside mirror, and heavy-duty battery. Following assembly, the
Thunderbird was delivered to Semmes Motors Inc. in Scarsdale, New
York.As offered, this rare "1 of 1,427" 1962 Ford Thunderbird
Sports Roadster benefits handsomely from a professional
restoration, including a refinish in its factory-specified Rangoon
Red paint, over the restored Red interior, which was updated from
the original Black upholstery. A power-operated White convertible
top provides wonderful visual contrast. The 300 HP 'Z' Code 390 CI
V-8 engine was upgraded to 'M' Code standard with 3x2 2-barrel
carburetors, plus the requisite oval air cleaner and engine
dress-up kit. An accessory tachometer is mounted to the steering
column in the 1960s tradition. A Ford Cruise-O-Matic 3-speed
automatic transmission delivers the Thunderbird-s power and torque.
Offered in exemplary restored condition, this factory-built 1962
ford Thunderbird Sports Roadster is a true postwar American icon on
four wheels. A window sticker copy and receipts are included. This
outstanding and highly rare 1962 Ford Thunderbird Sports Roadster
must be experienced first-hand. Be sure to contact us for viewing
