For Sale: 1985 Mercedes-Benz 380SL in Seattle, Washington

Vehicle Description

I bought my 1985 380 SL to be a collector car. Although I bought my car in 1990 I knew that I did not want a newer 560 SL. A model that was introduced in 1986. I also did not want any SLs from 1972 to 1979.
To me the 1985 380 SL is the best year of the true classic looking beautiful SLs with the most refinements.
The SLs from 1980 to 1985 were the lightest of the R107 series. Prior to 1980 the cars had cast iron engine blocks and steel bodies. In 1980 in Europe and 1981 in the US the SL appeared with a smaller, lighter 3.8 liter V8 that replaced the thirsty 4.5 liter. As a result the roadster weighed significantly less giving the 380 SL significant advantage in handling, braking, fuel economy and emissions. This car also has an aluminum hood, aluminum rear deck lid, aluminum wheels as well as an all aluminum engine. ( SL is German for super light) A 1957 to 1963 Mercedes 300 SL roadster weighs 3300 pounds. A 1985 380SL compares favorably in weight at 3395 pounds. Base weight of a 1986 560SL, however, is 3,781 pounds. In my opinion these cars were getting too heavy to be in the same tradition of the earlier SLs. Same could be said for the SLs from 1972 to 1979.
I also prefer the styling of the 380SL over the 560 SL. The sheet metal is smoother and cleaner . The 380 SL does not have the unattractive rear taillight on the trunk which was a regulatory requirement. The styling of my car has held up well and has that timeless classic look. It will look just as good in another 30 years. The year 1985 is regarded as the best year of the lighter R107 cars. Each year improvements were made. In 1985 the factory added an anti lock braking system to the 4 wheel disc brakes. In 1985 Mercedes added a Bosch KE Jetronic engine management system which controlled idle speed, fuel rate, and air/fuel mixture. Very important in 1985 was the factory upgrade of a double row timing chain which had been an issue on some earlier models. The car also has fully independent suspension. There is a color matched removable top  which was special ordered and a dark blue convertible top that has never been up as verified by the Bellevue Mercedes dealer. There are new Michelin tires.
I worked at different car dealers in high school and college and have driven hundreds of cars. I can honestly say that the build quality on this car is better than anything I have ever driven. When I bought the car at the Mercedes dealer  (The original owner bought from this same Seattle dealer) I bought a 24 month  extended warranty. I never had to use it. At a later date I replaced the fuel pump. Only issue I have ever had.
The color combination on my car is very classic, dark blue with dark blue leather interior. The leather smell is still there whenever you get in. The aluminum wheels and lots of chrome accents go well with the dark blue.
I have all the records, original manuals and literature on the car.
The car has always been stored in a heated garage. The car is adequately powered, drives very smooth and the steering wheel feel is light.
This is a great car to arrive in at an outdoor party in the summer. It is a real head turner. I would like to see it go to a good home.  Serious inquiries only. I hope you understand why I think this car is special. I was at the Mercedes museum this summer in Stuttgart. My car would have fit in nicely.
