Angular, modern, and imposing, Ferrari's 512 BB carried forward the
groundbreaking mid-engine Berlinetta Boxer concept first launched
with the 365 GT4 BB in 1971. With its enlarged 5.0-liter
flat-twelve, refined aerodynamics, and improved drivability, it
laid the foundation for the final and most advanced evolution of
the line. The 512 BBi that debuted in 1981 served as the model's
final evolution, with the "i" in its name indicating its Bosch
K-Jetronic CIS fuel-injection system-still a relatively new
technology for anyone, let alone Ferrari.
Aside from the model's first application of fuel injection, the 512
BBi's Tipo F110 A engine boasts dry-sump lubrication to prevent oil
starvation in the kind of aggressive cornering that Ferrari had in
mind for its mid-engine model. The gated five-speed manual
transmission was, by the 512 BBi's early 1980s introduction, a
Ferrari institution. The 512 BBi also gained subtle but meaningful
styling modifications intended to enhance its aerodynamic
performance. Benefitting from modern conveniences such as
power-operated windows, remote electric exterior mirrors, air
conditioning, and multi-adjustable seats with headrests, the 512
BBi has a deserved reputation for being the most comfortable and
livable of its breed.
Delivered to Autoexp GmbH near Stuttgart, Germany, this Rosso
Corsa (300) Senza Strisce Nere (without black lower bodywork) over
Nero leather 512 BBi was built in December 1983 and thus is among
the last examples produced. After spending time in Germany and
Japan, the car was imported to the U.S. in 2014. Today, the
Pininfarina-penned 512 BBi presents in exceptionally correct
condition, down to the unique Michelin TRX tires that wrap around
its quintessential five-spoke Cromodora alloy wheels with chrome
triple-ear knock-offs. The car also retains its svelte
European-market bumpers with correct lighting throughout extending
to the small repeater lamps mounted just ahead of the front wheel
arches. Inside, the black leather-upholstered cabin shows little
sign of use. Features such as the Ferrari-badged Pioneer graphic
equalizer cassette player remain present. The bold, easy-to-read
Veglia odometer displays a mere 19,938 kilometers at the time of
cataloging.
This 512 BBi was subjected to a thorough Ferrari Classiche
certification, which was subsequently completed in April of 2018.
The included Classiche "Red Book" notes that the chassis, engine
(serial number 00750), transmission (serial number 746), and body
are the original, matching-numbers components corresponding with
Ferrari factory records. Most recently, a major, nearly $30,000
service performed by the vaunted Gran Touring Classics of Long
Beach, California, in July 2024 included an engine-out service
reseal extending to the head gaskets as well as cooling system,
fuel injection, and ignition components. As a result, this 512 BBi
has been thoroughly refreshed with an up-to-date service.
This significant 512 BBi is one of the marque's last truly
hand-built models and is both a link to the brand's mid-ship
Boxer-engine past and its fuel-injected future. Presented in
ready-to-enjoy condition with a recent service, factory Classiche
certification, and a mere 19,938 kilometers at cataloging, chassis
number 48661 offers an excellent opportunity to acquire one of
finest examples of Maranello's iconic and collectible Berlinetta
Boxers.
