"Everyone should own a Mustang, at least once, and it doesn't
matter at all whether you're young or young at heart. Because in a
car as timeless as the Ford Mustang, you're ageless. It's your
time. So go ahead and get that Mustang and have the time of your
life! From the 1998 Mustang sales brochure.
For consignment, a 1998 Ford Mustang GT coupe with a title verified
129,721 actual miles. When a standard GT won't do, you take it to
the next level and prepare it for the track. This example has some
race inspired modifications including a new bottle of laughing gas
in the trunk.
Due to modifications of the emissions control devices installed by
the manufacturer, please check your local, state, and federal laws
to determine if this vehicle is applicable for use on public
highways in your area.*
Exterior
Repainted its original color seven years ago, the Pacific Green
Metallic appears in two stage coverage with lots of exterior
customizations that set the car apart. Let's start with a cowled
hood, headlight covers, wider side vents, quarter window ducts, and
rear window louvers. Plenty of black on board contrasts the green
including the fuel door, the stamped Mustang on the rear valance,
tail light bezels, fender stripes, and the tall side walls of the
cowl. Widely staggered tires create a dramatic rake, mounted on
17-inch American Muscle chrome Bullitt wheels. Hood pins hint at
what lurks below and a rear wing helps keep the tail planted. The
paint is very nice on the car and we could not find any exterior
imperfections.
Interior
Standard Mustang door panels in medium graphic constructed of
grained plastic and a carpeted lower insert along with storage and
typical switchgear. In place of the normal buckets are Corbeau
racing seats in black with racing harnesses tied to the roll cage
and the driver's seat has a tear at the ingress point. The black
cloth seats are still in the back and in good condition. A standard
steering wheel now wears billet cruise control buttons and provides
a view to the standard dashboard enhanced with AEM gauges for fuel
ratio and boost while a Ford Racing tachometer looms large to the
right. The center stack is fairly standard although billet replaces
plastic knobs to control the A/C and an AM/FM/Cassette radio with
CD player fills the rest of the space. A Hurst shifter fronts the
nitrous control panels. Gray carpet covers the floor and the
passenger side shows remnants of a previous mount, while the
headliner is in very nice condition. In the trunk, a Mustang
branded mat provides clean coverage and a big 'ol bottle of Nitrous
Express is tucked on the side. We should note that the doors have
Lambo hinges and can be opened both Lambo style and
traditional.
Drivetrain
The modified engine starts with the 4.6 liter SOHC V8 and includes
a 70mm turbocharger and NX nitrous system piped in. Extra bracing
and stainless piping dress up this racing engine and headers begin
the exhaust process. Behind the motor sits a Tremec T45 5-speed
manual transmission with a newer clutch sending power to the Ford
8.8" in back with newer 3.73 gears and TracLoc.
Undercarriage
Driver quality but clean underneath, the star of the show might be
the stainless steel exhaust which features an electric cut out with
a wide dump under the transmission. From there it splits into two
and enters FlowMaster mufflers before finding polished tips in
back. There is no catalytic converter onboard. Conditions are
mostly dry underneath and we note some sling from the rear U-joint.
Power disc brakes occupy front and rear and suspension consists of
coil springs at both ends with a 4 linkin back.
Drive-Ability
The 4.6 starts with a mighty roar and we're going through both
pipes! Hit the cut out and we'd probably violate Morgantown's sound
ordinance. The car rows through the gears with obvious power and
potential underfoot and tracks straight and true with the big meats
in back. All the gauges work to let us know what's happening under
that 4" cowl and braking is on point. We find the A/C is not
working but all other functions work as they should. While Classic
Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time
of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be
working at the time of your purchase.
This takes your pedestrian 4.6 GT and makes it beastly. It looks
intimidating, sounds intimidating, and yet provides a streetable
driving experience. If you wanted a Mustang but also wanted to
stand out from the crowd, strap yourself into this racing version
of a '98 GT!
