"The new Landau. A Monte Carlo and more. Matching the engineers'
success, our designers have created the elegant Landau. The
outstanding personal luxury car incorporates all mechanical
features of the Monte Carlo S and adds its own distinctive styling.
Like the Landau's special vinyl roof design. The result is a Monte
Carlo as tasteful as it is well mannered on the road." From the
1973 sales brochure.
For consignment, a 1973 Chevrolet Monte Carlo Landau with a title
verified 58,495 actual miles. Our consignor has owned it for ten
years and prior to that, it was a one family car. The car features
a numbers matching transmission and newer tires all around.
Exterior
The single stage Antique White paint is sharply contrasted by the
dark red vinyl roof and white tends to mute the body lines here,
which present as two astounding swooping fender bulges that flow
downward, as if being blown back by the wind. A dark pinstripe adds
a line of color, and the vinyl roof surrounds the rear quarter
window with amazing freshness and in a location that often suffers
the first fates of time, this appears to be in great shape with one
bubble on the passenger side. The single round headlights would
give way to square stacked versions in '76, and the eggcrate grille
remains bold and familiar. Ribbed tail lights are also familiar to
old friends as many thousands of Montes wore them over the years
and bookend the smooth lines of a decklid, latch panel, and
contouring chrome bumper over large, polished exhaust tips. 15-inch
Chevrolet Rally wheels are a nice compliment here and are wrapped
in 215/75R15 tires with a date code no earlier than late 2023.
Imperfections include cracking paint on the fenders, side mirrors
and roof, touched up chips, scuffs, general patina, and a crack in
the bumper filler.
Interior
Long door panels are super clean with a mix of Dark Red formed
plastic and stitch patterned vinyl inserts along with mirror
swivel, window crank, and even an ashtray. Bench seats were still a
popular option in '73 and here we have a split bench in red cloth
with elongated headrests, low profile by today's head restraint
configurations, and in fantastic condition. The stitch and button
backed rear bench is in equally nice condition with clean,
unblemished sidewalls. A touch of faux woodgrain accenting dresses
up the simple steering wheel which frames the simple gauge cluster,
also in plastic wood trim, and you get a speedometer, odometer, and
gas gauge and other than some idiot lights, with oil and water
warning lights to the left. In the center, you have a clock, A/C
controls and an AM/FM radio with a matching wood faceplate. The
rest of the dash is showroom clean and the low pile red carpet has
been kept nice with the use of mats and the headliner is picture
perfect. The trunk is lined with a rubber mat and we note some
chipping paint and surface rust on the underside of the deck
lid.
Drivetrain
The bay has been detailed and houses a 350ci V8 with a 2-barrel
carburetor and capable of generating 145 horsepower. It's mated to
the numbers matching TH350 3-speed automatic transmission which
routes power to the 10 bolt axle with 2.73 gears.
Undercarriage
Driver quality underneath with the typical surface rust and
generally dry condition with a film of oil on the pans and some
seepage on the rear differential. The dual exhaust runs through
stainless steel mufflers on its way to widened chrome tailpipes.
Power brakes are onboard as front disc and rear drum and suspension
consists of coil springs front and rear with a 4 link included in
back. While up on the lift, we note some rust forming on the pinch
weld of the door bottoms.
Drive-Ability
The 350 comes to life with a healthy exhaust note and GM's familiar
column shifter sets the car into Drive as we roll onto the test
loop. Decent pick up is observed, straight tracking, and handling
suitable for a family car is also experienced. We note the A/C is
not working and the gas gauge shows beyond full. Other than that,
all functional items work as they should. While Classic Auto Mall
represents that these functions were working at the time of our
test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at
the time of your purchase.
Children of the 70's will remember this cabin well! The ubiquitous
Monte Carlo showed up in middle class neighborhoods everywhere and
burgundy was a popular interior color. Here's a survivor that's in
very nice condition and brings back the memories. Sure, they were
family cars, but with a good bit of sport thrown into the mix along
with classic styling.
