Recognized as the first luxury 4 wheel drive sport utility vehicle,
the Jeep Grand Wagoneer continues to be an iconic vehicle for its
luxurious options and features. The Wagoneer model was produced
under numerous manufacturers from 1962-1991 and this first gen is
highly sought after by collectors today. According to Popular
Mechanics, "The Grand Wagoneer was a staple in upscale towns across
the country. And they were valet parked right alongside prestigious
car brands like the Mercedes-Benz, BMW, and Audi. Professional
golfer Greg Norman had a Wagoneer in his collection, and so did
Ralph Lauren."
For consignment, a 1991 Jeep Wagoneer showing 91,200 miles, but the
true miles are unknown. This example has been fully restored and
now features custom fuel injection and HEI ignition.
Due to modifications of the emissions control devices installed by
the manufacturer, please check your local, state, and federal laws
to determine if this vehicle is applicable for use on public
highways in your area.*
Exterior
We don't know where to look first, the glossy black paint on the
fantastic woodgrain trim. They're both great and together, epic.
The boxy shape will also forever be classic and the tall greenhouse
is ideal for sightseeing as you drive through national parks,
coastal towns, or just down your street. Simple tail lights come
under the large flat rear window and a roof rack provides a
matching shine to the polished trim that surrounds the window with
some robust construction. Single headlights retain the Jeep family
resemblance and a pair of foglights are perched on the front
bumper. The 15-inch wheels are immaculate and hold 225/70R15 all
around, preserving the straight, square stance. Cherry Oak vinyl
panels are framed in lighter wood colored trim for a striking, and
now legendary, exterior highlight. The only imperfection we find is
some chipping paint and evidence of filler down low.
Interior
Woodgrain adorns the interior as well, beginning on the door panels
where strips of woodgrain accent the beige, stitch patterned inner
doors, each with a wooden header and carpeted lower and in
beautiful condition. One panel on the driver's side rear door has
detached at a corner. Beautiful leather bucket seats feature cloth
inserts, electric controls, and carpeted shells and if you don't
think this is a luxury SUV, check out that level of detail. The
rear bench mirrors the materials and great condition and are low
backed in comparison. Behind those seats, the nicely carpeted cargo
area features stainless rails to make loading things easier, and
they extend onto the tailgate. Up front, the dash combines black
plastic housing for the square, (of course!), gauges and woodgrain
trim pieces in a light shade that blends well with both the black
and beige surroundings. An Alpine AM/FM/CD player with AUX and USB
is onboard and deep pile beige carpet is below with a wooden
cupholder serving as the center console.
Drivetrain
Under the hood and in the clean bay is a 5.9 liter Magnum V8 with
MSD fuel injection and the potential of 144 horsepower. It is mated
to an A727 Torqueflite 3-speed automatic that begins the power
delivery to front and rear Dana 44 axles with 2.73 gears.
Undercarriage
Typical patina is found underneath with mostly dry conditions and
the usual surface rust. In terms of components, we have a single
exhaust that runs through a FlowMaster muffler on its way to the
back and there is no catalytic converter in the system. Power
brakes are onboard as front disc and rear drum, and leaf spring
suspension is utilized front and rear.
Drive-Ability
A commanding view of the road and lots of light floods in as you
pilot this classic family adventure vehicle. The 5.9 starts without
hesitation and the V8 delivers a good ride with nice acceleration,
straight tracking, and turn-ins as you would expect for such an
SUV. We note the A/C is not working and both the left rear window
and tailgate window are open and close with very slow operation.
Beyond that, it's the dream ride as all functions operate as they
should. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions
were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee
these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
If you travel in time back to the era of the Wagoneer and ask
owners if they think they're trucks will be a highly desired
classic in the years to come, they will probably laugh, then finish
loading bags of manure in the back. They were intended to make your
trips to the feed store a bit more comfortable than the bare metal
pick up truck you were used to, but who would have guessed they'd
be in with the Niemann Marcus crowd in 2025? Find us someone who
doesn't love these, and we'll show you a rare human. Speaking of
rare, these rarely come for sale at the mall, and act quickly if
this one tickles your sense of adventure or collectability!
