The 1956 Mark II Continental** is a classic luxury car produced by
the Continental Division of Ford Motor Company. It was part of the
Lincoln Continental series and is highly regarded for its refined
design and high-quality craftsmanship. It was also marketed as a
"personal luxury car," .
There were approximately 3,000 Continental Mark IIs produced for
the 1956 and 1957 model years, with 2,550 produced in 1956 and the
remaining 444 in 1957, but some sources cite a total of 2,995 for
both years.
Here are some notable features of the 1956 Mark II Continental:
1. Design
The Mark II is known for its elegant and minimalist styling. It has
a sleek, clean body with sharp lines and a prominent front
grille.
Its design was heavily influenced by the era's luxurious tastes,
with a focus on long, flowing curves and smooth, understated
features.
It had a very clean, sophisticated look that still commands
attention today.
2. Performance Engine: It was powered by a 368 cubic inch (6.0 L)
V8 engine, producing around 285 horsepower.
Transmission: The Mark II came with a 4-speed automatic
transmission.
It was known for smooth, quiet performance, prioritizing comfort
over sportiness, which was typical of luxury vehicles at the
time.
3. Interior and Features
The cabin was filled with high-quality materials, including leather
upholstery, deep carpets, and walnut wood trim.
It offered an array of luxury options, like power windows, air
conditioning (which was quite advanced for its time), and high-end
audio systems.
The seats were plush, offering both comfort and elegance, which
made the Mark II ideal for long-distance cruising.
4. Price and Exclusivity
When it was released, the Mark II Continental had a starting price
of $10,000, which was an exorbitant amount for the time. This made
it one of the most expensive cars in America at the time, and as a
result, it was considered a symbol of prestige and exclusivity.
Its high price tag and limited production made it rare, and many
were sold to affluent individuals and celebrities.
5. Legacy
Despite its luxury and elegance, the Mark II was not a financial
success for Ford. It was discontinued after only two years of
production (1956-1957).
However, it has since become a highly sought-after classic among
collectors due to its unique place in automotive history and its
timeless design.
The Mark II is seen as a precursor to the Lincoln Continental
models of the 1960s, which further cemented the Continental brand's
association with luxury.
6. Collectibility
Today, the 1956 Mark II is a sought-after collector's car. Its
rarity, combined with its design and quality, makes it a desirable
piece for vintage car enthusiasts.
Its current value can vary significantly based on condition,
restoration, and provenance, but well-maintained examples can fetch
prices in the six-figure range at auctions.
This is a fine example of a 1956 Mark II Continental that rides and
drives fantastic and goes straight down the road. This is a nice
driver with some blemishes but still shows very well and priced
accordingly.
The paint still has a nice shine and the body panel fit & finish of
the body panels is nice. The chrome trim and bright work glisten in
the sun. The original interior is nice but showing some wear but
still presents well. The engine compartment is very nicely detailed
and original; as is the trunk compartment.
