As a last-ditch effort to save Pontiac, Bob Lutz's Solstice was
ultimately unsuccessful. However, in the broader context of that
failure, the 2007 Pontiac Solstice GXP and cars like it, were
incredibly successful, creating a fun and unique performance sports
car. With just 30,102 actual miles, this droptop roadster sports
its original Mean Yellow exterior paint, complemented by a pair of
silver racing stripes. While exact numbers are difficult to pin
down, reputable sources indicate that the number of Mean Yellow GXP
convertibles produced for the entire Solstice model run is likely
just a few hundred. Then consider that this 2007 model is the first
year for the hi-po GXP, and suddenly we have a strikingly
collectible car.
Inside, we find a sporty and driver-centric Ebony leather interior.
Dual bucket seats offer a perfect balance of comfort and support. A
three-spoke power-assisted steering wheel with thumb controls sits
ahead of a three-pod gauge cluster where a small center fuel gauge
is bookended by a big 140 mph speedometer and an 8,000 rpm
tachometer. The wraparound dashboard is home to simple HVAC
controls, along with an upgraded Kenwood touchscreen head unit that
provides Bluetooth, SiriusXM, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. A
separate backup camera screen is plugged into the 12-volt power
outlet, offering a clear view of everything behind you. Power
windows, mirrors, and locks, combined with cruise control and air
conditioning, offer all the modern amenities anyone could want in a
late-model sports car.
Under that expansive clamshell-style hood, we find a turbocharged
and intercooled 2.0-liter DOHC Ecotec inline-four-cylinder engine.
Featuring a lightweight aluminum block and head as well as variable
valve timing, this mighty mouse motor was able to pump out an
impressive and balanced 260 horsepower at 5,300 rpm and 260
pound-feet of torque at 2,500 rpm. That power is routed through a
five-speed manual transmission before being sent out to the 3.73:1
geared rear end. Thanks to a sub-3000-pound curb weight, the
Solstice GXP could run from 0-60 mph well under six seconds and
through the quarter mile in the high 13-second range, making it
plenty fun whenever an empty on-ramp comes around.
