When the C4 debuted for the 1984 model year, it was a quantum leap
for Chevy's iconic Corvette. With just 28,005 actual miles on its
odometer, this Bright Red 1989 Chevrolet Corvette Convertible looks
just as striking today as it did more than 35 years ago. With its
manual white canvas top up or down, the unmistakable lines of the
fourth generation look fantastic from any angle.
Inside, we find a sporty and original-looking leather interior. A
high center storage center console separates a pair of plush and
supportive power seats. The two-spoke power-assisted steering wheel
sits ahead of the fantastically fun C4 digital dashboard, featuring
video-game-style gauges. Although the Kenwood AM/FM/CD/AUX head
unit is a modern upgrade over the unit it replaces, its digital
readout looks right at home inside the futuristic-feeling C4's
interior. Power locks, windows, and mirrors, along with air
conditioning and cruise control, as well as dual cupholders, offer
all the modern amenities one could hope for in a late-1980s sports
car.
Under that signature front-hinged hood, we find a 5.7-liter
overhead valve V-8 engine. With its cast-iron block, lightweight
aluminum heads, tuned-port injection system, and factory exhaust
setup, this small block was capable of producing a legitimate 245
horsepower at 4,300 rpm and 340 pound-feet of torque at 3,200 rpm
when I rolled off the assembly line. That power is funneled through
a 700R4 four-speed automatic transmission before being sent out to
the 2.59-geared rear end, which transfers those ponies to the
pavement via a set of big five-spoke 19-inch alloy wheels shod in
285/35ZR-19 Hankook rubber. At the same time, a staggered set of
18-inch wheels wrapped in narrower 245/40ZR-18 tires handles
steering duties up front.
