Want to see a great example of post-World War II automotive style?
Then look no further than this 1946 Ford Super Deluxe Coupe. This
is a sharp vintage ride, featuring a whole host of aesthetic
details, starting up front with its long, tapered hood crowned by a
nicely detailed hood ornament and an intricate front grille that
was extensively redesigned the very year this cruiser came out. The
stone guards mounted on the rear quarter panels add a bit of
contrast while also protecting the adjacent sheet metal from road
hazards. Clad in an appealing shade of blue, this Ford classic has
come through the years in good shape. The paint itself shows some
well-earned patina that provides a bit of additional character, but
if you choose to freshen it up, you'll be starting with a
well-aligned body as a canvas.
Inside, the spacious interior appears surprisingly fresh, and wears
a striking blue and gray color scheme that's quite a departure from
the more basic shades this model featured before going on hiatus
because of the war. Both the split bench front seat and the rear
bench seat look downright plush, and the door panels to each side
remain firmly attached. Up front, the factory steering wheel is
still perched on the column, and the gauges just beyond it are
surprisingly clear. The surrounding dash really presents well, and
check out all the art deco-inspired details and that generously
sized clock at its center.
Beneath that prominent hood waits a 239 cubic-inch flathead V8 that
represented the most potent engine option Ford offered for this
classic. It sits in a nicely maintained engine bay, with no grime
in sight. A closer inspection will reveal an assortment of
fresh-looking hoses, belts, and wiring, providing a good indication
that this coupe has received proper attention. That attention has
paid dividends, without a doubt. This Super Deluxe starts up
promptly, idles smoothly, and accelerates with no issues. Once on
the road, it tracks nicely as well, resulting in road manners that
are truly hard to come by in a nearly 80-year-old ride.
