"The concept of van life, which has become a mainstream lifestyle
choice for many today, has its roots deeply embedded in a
countercultural movement. It's a journey that spans several
decades, evolving from a symbol of rebellion to a widely embraced
way of life. Van life's journey from counterculture to mainstream
highlights a shift in societal values towards greater freedom,
flexibility, and a desire to reconnect with the world in a more
meaningful way. It's a movement that continues to inspire and
evolve, offering a unique blend of adventure and
simplicity."Boho.life.com
For consignment, a 1993 Chevrolet Van 20 Rockwood conversion with a
title verified 112,003 actual miles. While this is not configured
like a camper, it does feel like a comfortable living room on
wheels which will turn normal commutes into magic carpet rides for
passengers, front and rear.
Exterior
Stripes and graphics were a big deal in the early 90's and this one
hasn't lost its period charm, decked out with Beige Metallic and
Radisson Red Metallic paint in stripes, lines, and bold graphic
shapes. The red roof has a luggage rack and the spare mounted on
the back has a matching cover next to the ladder connected to the
rear barn door. Windows differentiate this from a regular van with
many, large, camper style windows including those built into the
side and rear doors, and they're all tinted. A black grille and
dual headlights front the van and we note the hood has some peeling
clear coat. The 15-inch wheels carry 225/75R15 tires with a mid
2023 date code and Rockwood is expressed on the rear side panels.
Condition wise, we'd rate this as good with some general patina
throughout, a loose windshield seal, oxidation on the roof panel,
filler repair, scratches, and lots of rust bubbles around the wheel
openings and fenders.
Interior
Tan and burgundy make up the interior palette with all door panels
and seats covered with tan cloth in varying textures and all in
fine condition. The seats have the added enhancement of duvet-like
extensions that hide the seat hardware and the second row consists
of bucket seats, the third is a bench that folds down flat. A
standard steering wheel leads to a basic gauge cluster in a brushed
aluminum faceplate, all surrounded with burgundy textured plastic,
the type that was ubiquitous in GM 80's and 90's vehicles. A Delco
AM/FM/Cassette radio resides in the center stack over some storage
bins and tan carpet a bit too short to call shag, but not far off.
The beige headliner above is held in place with wooden rails while
Levolor type blinds cover the side windows.
Drivetrain
Partially visible under the hood, we find driver quality conditions
of GM's 4.3 liter V6, rated at 165 horsepower and fuel injected.
It's mated to a 4L60E 4-speed automatic transmission that sends
power to the 10 bolt axle with 3.42 gears.
Undercarriage
Surface rust prevails underneath with a spot of some pitted stuff
on part of the frame. There is some residual oil on the pan and a
drop by the driveshaft, but overall the underside is clean. Power
brakes are onboard as front disc and rear drum and a single exhaust
flows through a Dynomax muffler before exiting. Suspension consists
of coil springs in front and leaf springs in back.
Drive-Ability
Upon starting and slightly accelerating, we note an engine knock so
we quickly check functionality of switches, lights, and other items
and all operate as intended. While Classic Auto Mall represents
that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we
cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of
your purchase.
Lots of options here. Clean and comfortable commuter for school
kids, further conversion to self contained camper, or use for day
trips to parks and beaches. The interior remains in very clean
condition and presents a great opportunity to use as you see fit,
and since the rear seat folds into a bed, overnighters are not out
of the question.
