"Stephen M. Saleen, is the founder and CEO of Saleen Automotive.
This automotive visionary founded Saleen in 1984 with a purposeful
goal of bringing race proven performance to the street. Mr. Saleen
is considered one of the most successful and well known automotive
legends in the country. Mr. Saleen's entrepreneurial business plan
laid the groundwork for an entire new industry of design,
engineering, manufacturing, and sales of high performance vehicles
that were race proven and marketed for sales through showrooms
nationwide." Thx Saleen.com
For consignment, a 2006 Ford Mustang Saleen S281 coupe with a title
verified 2,157 actual miles. The "281" refers to the cubic inches
which the 4.6 liter V8 measures out to, and the S represents
Saleen, and to some, supercharged. This is a two owner car and
neither one of them drove it very much, accounting for it's amazing
low mileage. Depending on what camp you're in, you'll either
preserve it with low mileage or drive it like you stole it.
Exterior
You don't mind if we start at the back, do you? This is where the
Saleen clearly differentiates itself from mere mortal Mustangs. The
back deck wears a ribbed black panel with the third part of the
three part tail lights covered with a matching plate and that
change alone sets this car apart. But then Saleen takes the lower
valance and includes splitter slots and center exit dual oval tips.
Up above, the rear wing hugs close to the deck lid, contouring over
it all the way back to the window. Side cladding adds some style
while the front is smoothed with flush marker lights, and wind
defeating aerodynamics around a solid black grille. As typical, the
car's individual number is represented on the front bumper. Heat
extractor vents are cut into the hood and SALEEN can be found in
seven place, including the brake calipers behind the 20-inch chrome
wheels. The car's color is officially Tungsten Gray and blends well
with the Saleen side stripes. A chip on the chin accounts for the
only exterior imperfection.
Interior
The standard GT door panels are sufficient to serve this special
edition and do so with clean lines and in great condition. The
black leather bucket seats feature a ribbed column down the middle,
Saleen embroidery on the uppers, and finned head restraints. The
rear seats share the design but lack head rests and all are in
excellent condition. The Saleen logo appears on the center of the
steering wheel and on the gauges in front of you as bright red
needles serve as indicators. The center stack is your standard fare
with the Shaker 500 system for the AM/FM/CD radio and dials for the
climate control. Boost and air temp gauges are perched on top of
the dash and a straight handled shifter resides in the center
console. S281 is on the carpeted mats that cover the black carpet
below and the foam backed headliner, like the rest of the interior,
is fresh and clean. The trunk is finished with gray cloth covered
panels and remains spotless.
Drivetrain
Saleen does its magic in the engine bay and labels it as such, a
4.6 liter three valve supercharged V8 capable of 435 horsepower and
mated to a Tremec 3650 5-speed manual transmission routing the herd
of horses to the Ford 8.8" axle with 3.55 gears and TracLoc.
Needless to say, the engine bay looks like it did on day one.
Undercarriage
So clean that even chalk marks remains from assembly! The dual
exhaust runs large and in charge under the car, connecting with
MagnaFlow mufflers that have an unusual configuration. One short
pipe from the mufflers and one that leads to the center exit. When
you get on it, the exhaust bypasses half the muffler and dumps
underneath, but when cruising around town, they go through the full
muffler and out the center exit. Meanwhile, suspension is comprised
of Macpherson struts up front and a 3 link with coil springs and a
panhard bar in back. Power disc brakes occupy front and rear.
Drive-Ability
Even going through the Magnaflow mufflers, the sound is sweet and
we're feeling confident in the car because the tires are
practically brand new, with a date code no older than late 2024.
It's evident that there's power underfoot and we're not letting all
435 horses out of the stable, and don't really need to on our short
test loop. The car tracks straight, handles well, and stops on a
dime, no complaints there! We note the check engine light is on for
a evap leak code but beyond that, all functional items operate as
they should on this like new Saleen. While Classic Auto Mall
represents that these functions were working at the time of our
test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at
the time of your purchase.
Production numbers are actually hard to come by, but we're
confident there are less than 2,000 Saleens for 2006 making this a
fairly rare car. Credit goes to Mr. Saleen for creating these
stylish supercharged Mustangs with the instantly recognizable tail
and body and performance enhancements that stand out from the
standard GT's, all 78,000 of them!
