Throughout development of the Chevrolet Corvette's first
generation, General Motors struggled to get a read on the
notoriously fickle American sports car market. America's Sports Car
wasn't quite the sales success against the imports it hoped for,
and as sales ebbed and flowed, threats to axe the project came
often. But the Corvette engineering team, led by Zora Arkus-Duntov,
fought tooth and nail to keep the Corvette alive, making numerous
changes to the styling and mechanical spec to bolster sales and
improve performance.
Ford's success with the Thunderbird proved that a stylish
boulevardier was what buyers wanted, so a restyled Corvette arrived
in 1956 that was more ornate and flashier to keep up with
contemporary trends but maintained a performance edge over the
plush T-Bird. From 1955, V8 engines were preferred, and the Blue
Streak inline six-cylinder was dropped by end of that year. The
1958 model year marked another major redesign as the Corvette
gained its distinct quad-headlamp face. While the chassis remained
the same basic ladder-type frame with solid axle and independent
front end, and the V8 was continually improved each year. In 1958,
displacement was 283 cubic inches, and options for carbureted
engines started at 230 hp, while two Rochester mechanical fuel
injection-equipped versions made 250 hp or a stonking 290 hp (RPO
code 579D) with high-lift cam, solid lifters, and 10.5:1
compression. Combined with the 4-speed manual transmission, the
1958 'Fuelie was truly the best of both worlds- stylish and
well-equipped for cruising, but with outstanding performance,
especially with that fantastic fuel-injected engine. It is little
wonder that the 1958 Corvette remains a landmark model in the
history of America's Sports Car.
Beautifully presented in white with silver coves, this striking
1958 Corvette is a rare and highly desirable car equipped with the
"579D" 290-horsepower fuel injected engine. This beautiful example
joined the current owner's stable in 2006, and prior to that, it
was reportedly given a no-expense-spared body-off restoration
finished to concours standards. Under prior ownership, it is said
to have earned both NCRS Topflight and Bloomington Gold awards,
among the highest honors for a restored Corvette.
In addition to the chart-topping engine, this car also features a
4-speed manual transmission, 4.11-ratio Posi-traction rear axle,
power windows, heater, courtesy light, and Wonderbar radio. Having
covered a mere 532 miles in the nearly 20 years since its
restoration, it remains in marvelous condition, with excellent
detailing throughout. Some minor crazing of the paint is noted on
the rear deck under close inspection, however, this does little to
detract from this car's marvelous character and exceptional overall
quality.
While the restoration has a few years on it, this Corvette remains
in outstanding condition, suitable for casual shows or to enjoy the
ample performance on tours and classic rally events. With the added
benefit of rarity, being one of an estimated 1,007 built, this is
an American icon most worthy of your consideration.
Offers welcome and trades considered.
