Vehicle Description

1950 Ford F4 Flatbed Truck

"The 1950 Ford F4 doesn't just represent a vehicle; it embodies the post war American spirit of resilience and innovation. Born from the industrious halls of the Ford Motor Company, this robust truck was designed to meet the demands of a nation rebuilding and expanding. As the bigger brother in the famed F-Series, the F4 was crafted for heavy duty work, reflecting the era's need for utility and reliability." Thx Metrommp.com

For consignment, a 1950 Ford F4 Flatbed truck showing 114 miles, but the true miles are unknown. The truck is a two owner rig, stored by its first owner and restored by its second. More from mmp, "The F4's introduction coincided with a burgeoning economy, where businesses required sturdy vehicles for transportation and heavy lifting".

Exterior
Glade Green provides smooth coverage on the big fenders and large proportion of the cab, augmented by a robust chrome grille, air ducts, and headlight rings. The lights are based in gray and the bumper is solid black, both creating a pleasing contrast to the green and chrome. Hood vents are trimmed in polished bands and black returns on the big step and 19.5-inch budd wheels. The black bed retains the exterior color coordination, including the planks which are painted black. Surface mounted D-rings surround the flatbed which spread wide over the dual wheels. The paint, trim, emblems, and wood are all in fantastic condition and we could not find any exterior imperfections.

Interior
Work trucks in this period were no frills, to say the least, and steel walled door panels were the norm, here color keyed to the body and perfectly clean. The utilitarian theme continues to the front bench, simple and black in grain vinyl. The black steering wheelleads to the vintage instrument cluster, backed in a gold face plate and relaying just six bits of information in easy to read gauges. Gray colors the center grille over the glistening green dash and rubber mats surround the floor mounted shifter and handbrake, all clean. You may feel like a pea in a pod as the walls, ceiling, and footwells wear the exterior color with shine.

Drivetrain
The show continues in the engine bay where we find a 239ci flathead V8 capable of 100 horsepower and fueled via a 2-barrel carburetor. It's backed by a non synchronized 4-speed manual transmission with creeper gear for first. The truck runs on a 6 volt system and has a new wiring harness.

Undercarriage
Fantastically clean underneath where satin black dominates the color palette. Headers emit dual exhaust that runs through Cherrybomb mufflers just before dumping under the truck. Drum brakes are utilized front and rear and benefit from a new master cylinder and wheel cylinders. Heavy duty leaf springs are also employed at both ends, and the stack of leaves in back is substantial. We note a line of oil coming from the front of the engine onto the oil pan, but the rest of the underside is rust free and dry.

Drive-Ability
If you've ever dreamed about time traveling to 1950, this truck does it in a way that mimics picking up your brand new F4 at the Ford truck depot before you head off to work and get the thing dirty. Meanwhile, the V8 propels the big truck forward without issue and you have a commanding view of the road. Our consignor tells us the truck's max is 45mph and requires double clutching. We don't get that high but trust it can. Other than the horn, all operational features, and there aren't many of course, work as they should on this nicely restored truck. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.

"One notable moment in its history was its contribution to the American workforce, becoming a symbol of the country's post war revitalization," according to metrommp. Therefore, this is a wonderful turn key vintage truck with clear historic implications. Whether this ends up in a museum, parade, local show, or even concours event, it will shine bright and impress those who value U.S. history and the Ford line.
