The second generation Buick Skylarks were produced from 1968 to
1972 and were a wildly popular A-body car that was produced in huge
numbers. It was basic transportation and was available as a two
door coupe, sedan, convertible, and four door sedan. You could get
a painted hardtop or seemingly more common for the period, the
vinyl roof. But like Ford, Chevy, Oldsmobile, Dodge at the time,
Buick offered its own high performance version with the Gran Sport
line, and at the king of the hill GSX.
For consignment, a 1971 Buick Skylark 2 door sedan showing 21,185
miles, but the true miles are unknown. This is a one family car,
bought by a Buick mechanic who kept it garage kept and show worthy
and now presents as a time capsule of a bygone era when A-bodies
ruled the street as daily commuters. This car has its numbers
matching transmission.
Exterior
Not only were A-bodies popular in the early 70's, but so were earth
tones, including green and this one retains its single state Silver
Fern coverage in very nice condition. These are attractive cars
with nice proportions and a C-pillar that flows seamlessly into the
rear panel. Though GM shared the platform, when you look at the
face of a Buick, it's handsome and distinctive and chrome fills
this one in the headlight bezels and bumper that absorbs dual
intakes and the marker lights. In back, the chrome conforms with
the body and houses the straight tail lights under point crested
fenders. 215/75R14 tires with a late 2018 date code surround the
14-inch steel wheels with proper wheel coverings so often replaced
with aftermarket wheels. This is how they looked in 1971.
Imperfections are limited to some bubbling around wheel
openings,
Interior
Green on green is money in '71 and this one started with dark green
vinyl door panels with geometric stitch design that was also common
in the era. You've got cranks for the window including the vent
window which we called the "smoker's window" in Grandma's car. The
split bench includes vinyl borders around brocade cloth, a satiny,
patterned material that dresses up the interior, here with a tear
on the driver's side but clean otherwise front and back and sharing
the stitch pattern of the door for a nice connection. A sort of
avocado green colors the plastic steering wheel that's in very nice
shape, and the plastic surround of the dash. Here we find two
active gauges that include the speedometer and a blank screen used
for tachometers in the hi-po versions. The green loop carpet is in
nice condition covered with some vintage Buick rubber mats and the
headliner is darn near pristine. A plaid vinyl mat occupies the
trunk and shows some use.
Drivetrain
Under the hood, we find a clean and original presentation of the
350ci V8, capable of 230 horsepower and fueled by a 2-barrel
carburetor. Behind it, a numbers matching TH350 3-speed automatic
transmission sending power to the 10 bolt rear axle.
Undercarriage
Overall the underside is in very clean condition with minimal
surface rust, no invasive rust nor road dirt. We note oil sling at
both ends of the driveshaft and a few drops on the pan,
transmission, and crossmember. There's also some grease build up on
the knuckles and wheel components. In terms of equipment, power
brakes are on board as drums all around. The single exhaust is
intact and flows through a stock style muffler before exiting via a
steel pipe in back. Suspension is comprised of coil springs front
and rear with a 4 link in back.
Drive-Ability
If you're a child of the 70's, the cabin might bring back some fond
memories. We grab the green steering wheel, pump the gas, turn the
key, and put that familiar column shifter into Drive. The car rolls
along nicely and the engine runs smooth. With a wheelbase shorter
than the LeSabre and other big Buicks, the Skylark handles with
more nimble agility. We note the A/C is not working but all other
functions operate as they should. While Classic Auto Mall
represents that these functions were working at the time of our
test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at
the time of your purchase.
Buick Club of America members, take note. This is a good one and
pampered by a Buick family since it left the showroom. You don't
have to be a BCA member to purchase this car, obviously, but you
should definitely join afterwards and have the opportunity to share
this time capsule with the Buick world, or at any other car
show.
