"He bought it for its luxury, but all he talks about is
performance. Owners of 1968 Cadillacs are so enthusiastic about the
alert response and smooth, quiet operation of the new 472 V8
engine, that they often fail to mention the other outstanding
features. Your authorized Cadillac dealer will point out the
brilliant new interiors and innovations such as concealed
windshield wipers and improved variable ratio power steering. Then
discover for yourself Cadillac's truly remarkable performance."
From a 1968 print ad.
For consignment, a 1968 Cadillac Sedan DeVille 4 door hardtop with
a title verified 54,502 actual miles. This is a garage find that's
been in slumber since 1987 and purchased from the original owner,
tuned up, and put back on the road!
Exterior
Single stage Caribe Aqua covers this long car and we'll talk about
the imperfections but note that this is a great color for the car
and its original color. But what registers in the observant brain
is the sheer size of the car, nearly 225 inches overall, that's
almost 19 feet of slab sided steel and acres of horizontal sheets
of metal. Beautifully proportioned with symmetrical sections and
fender ends that are square and pointed both front and rear. The
black vinyl top is in good condition with some bubbling noted at
the base. Both front and rear fascia are iconic and classic and
unmistakably Cadillac, and that's the appeal. Fender skirts smooth
out the rear quarter and 15-inch wheels with newer tires and proper
wheel covers are in place. The paint shows typically single stage
dulling and more prominent imperfections include some elongated
dents, long scratches, rock chips, and some rust bubbling. The left
front door is a different shade of aqua.
Interior
The ultimate in luxury of this era was the use of the Brocade cloth
and it's actually present first as an insert on the door panels
with detail right down to the scrolled, aluminum frame of the
insert. From there, smooth blue panels and brushed aluminum
switchgear plates dress the doors up, finished with carpeted lower
panels and padded armrests. Brocade is used on the bench seats with
leather borders and center armrest, and ornamental buttons. Other
than some compression on the front, the seats remain in very good
condition and rear passengers even get a robe loop ahead of them
over Brocade fabric on the back of the front bench. They also get
ample leg room and a courtesy light on the C-pillar. Ahead of the
blue steering wheel is a smartly designed dashboard with horizontal
gauges and a brushed metal mid panel that houses the AM/FM radio,
all of it showing a touch of patina. Plush blue carpet and a blue
stitched headliner is above, both with subtle signs of age. The
same in the enormous trunk which is lined with gray panels.
Drivetrain
The bay is clean and houses the 472ci V8, rated at 375 horsepower
and fueled by a rebuilt 4-barrel carburetor. It's backed by the
numbers matching TH400 3-speed automatic transmission sending power
to the rear axle with 2.94 gears. Our consignor states the starter
has been rebuilt, the car has new fuel lines and fuel pumps, master
cylinder, and new battery.
Undercarriage
The fuel tank has been resealed and is stand out clean on this
driver quality underside where light surface rust is normal and
prominent. There are a few drops of oil on the pan but generally
dry conditions. Power drum brakes are at all four wheels and the
single exhaust runs through a stock style muffler before exiting
via a steel tailpipe. Suspension consists of coil springs front and
rear with a 4 link in the back. Wheel cylinders, springs, shocks,
and ball joints have been replaced according to our consignor.
Drive-Ability
We roll Detroit's pride onto the test loop after starting the big
472 and experience the ultimate cruising machine. The engine has
gobs of power even as it moves this heavyweight around, the car
tracks straight and the brakes answer the call when pressed. We
note the A/C, clock, power antenna, and reverse lights are not
working. But all other features on this slumbering giant have come
back to life. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these
functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot
guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your
purchase.
Talk about curb appeal, the stately presence of this DeVille
overshadows its less than perfect paint and body. With a little
TLC, this is close to show winning quality, and even as is, we
wouldn't hesitate to show it off. You don't need a CDL to drive
this behemoth, but it's going to feel much bigger than your Subaru,
and a lot more special.
