"Basically, you get the ultimate track oriented Camaro SS and a car
that also happens to look like a much fancier Camaro, or possibly a
hero character in Transformers. There's nothing subtle about the SS
1LE, and that's good, because who wants a subtle Camaro?No one I
want to be friends with." Jalopnik, June 2014
For consignment, a 2014 Chevrolet Camaro 1SS coupe with a title
verified 9,712 actual miles. Chevrolet hit a home run with the
facelift for the sixth generation Camaro and the SS is especially
aggressive while retaining some of the heritage cues from the first
generation.
Exterior
They could have called it Retina Searing Red, but instead GM went
with Red Hot, which still works to accurately describe a color
bright enough to cause fire engines to pull to the right. Other
cars might pull over too because a quick glance in the rear view
mirror shows a pseudo race car coming up with glaring narrow eyes,
a gaping intake, and a ground hugging chin spoiler. Of course,
there are the matte black stripes on the hood and dramatic heat
extractor vents. When it passes you, the composite tail lights with
a hint of the 60's will catch your eye, briefly, and the
pipeline-like exhaust tips will yell goodbye while you navigate the
turbulent air coming off the rear spoiler. Did you catch the
special wheels? 20-inch black spoked affairs are showing off the
disc brakes behind. The paint and body are in spectacular condition
and the only imperfections we find are numerous chin scrapes on the
extended front spoiler.
Interior
As loud as the color is on the outside, things quiet down on the
inside with monochromatic black coverage beginning on the plastic
door panels with cloth inserts and that cloth is used on the robust
bucket seats, augmented by white stitching, and repeated in color
in back which also have side support but to a lesser degree, but
each are spotless. Leather makes an entrance wrapping the meaty
steering wheel while square pods hold round gauges ahead of the
driver with a central digital readout. The center stack is an
integrated unit with knobs surrounding a screen with AM/FM/CD,
Mylink, Bluetooth, XM capability, navigation, and a backup camera.
White stitching on a black leather boot surrounds the shifter in
the center console and black carpet covers the floor. The contoured
foam backed headliner is in nice condition and the carpet is
showroom fresh and topped with a cloth mat.
Drivetrain
Shrouded with covers is the mighty 6.2 liter LS3 V8 putting out a
thundering 426 horsepower and sending power to 3.45 gears with
limited slip in back via the TR6060 6-speed manual transmission.
The engine bay could have easily jumped out of a dealer brochure,
it's just that clean.
Undercarriage
Some typical and minimal metal oxidation is the only thing keeping
this side from looking factory fresh. The dual exhaust travels down
the center tunnel that's lined with heat shielding to find original
equipment mufflers towards the back. Brembo power disc brakes are
at all four wheels and suspension consists of coil springs up front
and multi-link with coil spring on the independent rear.
Drive-Ability
Not unlike stepping into a brand new car, the cloth seats are
supportive and tall and ergonomics are as good as you would want,
keeping the general themes of the 60's but bolstering every surface
and switch with modern breadth. The car moves quickly, sounds
pretty good doing it, and handles like its road racing ancestors
could have only dreamed about. Of course, as a sub 10k mile car,
every function on board works as it should. While Classic Auto Mall
represents that these functions were working at the time of our
test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at
the time of your purchase.
This is a well maintained and barely driven beast of a Chevrolet
and an ode to all the great Camaros that came before it. The color
is fantastic and the engine is superb. Bonus, the original tires
and wheels come with this car! Get ready to move left lane lackies
to the right, and you won't even have to flash your brights to do
it.
