If you're searching for an outstanding representative of Ford's
iconic Pony Car in its pivotal first-generation form, you need look
no further than this 1970 Ford Mustang Convertible. This droptop
classic makes a great first impression. It's wearing vibrant red
paint that has a deep shine, and the accompanying collection of
chrome presents nicely, with straight, unblemished bumpers at both
ends and badging that remains in top condition. Up front, the
grille and surrounding trim are clean, and the glass surrounding
the cabin is clear and free from any road-bound damage. Not only
does the featured shaker hood yield performance benefits, but it
also looks sharp and really adds to this vintage Ford's curb
appeal.
It's always a welcome sight to encounter a classic interior as
clean as this one, while still retaining a largely factory
appearance. Dressed in black vinyl, the front bucket seats are nice
and fresh and feature high backs for plenty of support during
longer journeys. They bracket a center console that features faux
wood trim, a defining style element at the time this Mustang was
introduced, that's matched by the instrument cluster just beyond
the stock steering wheel. The dash area is free from any obvious
warpage and harbors a collection of clear, easy-to-read gauges. An
aftermarket Jensen AM/FM/Cassette sits at the center of the dash,
blending perfectly with its surroundings. Unlike many droptops from
its era, harsh weather won't necessarily confine this Pony to your
garage. Its accompanying white convertible top is in fine shape and
features a glass rear window for good visibility.
Raise the Shaker Hood and you'll find a 351 cubic-inch V8 standing
by in the center of a well-maintained engine bay, surrounded by
fresh hoses and properly routed wiring. It's equipped with both an
Edelbrock intake manifold and a Holley 4-barrel carburetor to
enhance its output, and pairs with a 3-speed automatic transmission
that shifts smoothly to make up a drivetrain that will inspire
confidence when you turn the key. The engine exhales into a pair of
long tube headers that lead out to Turbo mufflers that provide just
the right deep, but non-disruptive exhaust note. This
first-generation Mustang is a nice driver. It starts right up,
accelerates with no hesitation, and its power brakes, which feature
discs up front, bring things to a stop without any fanfare.
