Leading into the third year of sales, the GTO continued to find
sales soaring in popularity. Because of this, GM finally gave the
GTO its own model line versus being a performance package option
for the Lemans model series. Also in 1966, Pontiac was already
developing a new engine for the 1967 production year making this
the last of the 389ci V8 examples ever made, and a one-year-only
redesigned tri-power carburetion with a larger center carburetor!
The stacked headlights, new aggressive tapered front grill, and
louvered taillights made these cars iconic to the muscle car
collectors worldwide!
We are very proud to offer this beautifully kept 1966 Pontiac GTO
Hardtop refinished in Platinum Silver (originally NN-Burgundy) over
all factory original 223-B black Strato-Bucket Seat interior.
Features include numbers matching, WS-code 389ci 3x2bbl Tri-Power
V8 engine with correct intake, correct Rochester 2-Jet carburetion,
correct code "093" heads, exhaust manifolds, Harrison radiator,
Delco-Remy distributor, alternator, and voltage regulator. This is
mated to its factory, original Muncie M20 wide-ratio 4-speed manual
transmission with Custom Shift Knob & center console, and 10-bolt
rear axle upgraded with new Auburn 3.36 Posi-Traction gearing
(originally 3.55 std. ratio). Additional features include 14"
wheels wrapped in Firestone Super Wide Oval F70-14 redline tires
with standard wheel disc hubcaps, factory Wonder-Touch power
steering, Ride & Handling Package, Rally Instrumentation with
Tachometer, day/night tilt rearview mirror, original AM radio with
rear seat speaker, tinted windshield glass, Custom Sports steering
wheel, deluxe Fisher seatbelts front and rear, and interior floor
mats.
This car sold new from Rodgers Pontiac in Knoxville, TN and stayed
with its original owner, Harold Bishop, until October 2000. He
would be a wonderful caretaker of this Goat, providing one single
repaint from the original burgundy color to silver in 1999. He
would later sell to a close friend he had met through car club
gatherings. After short term ownership, and likely some
considerable pestering, this owner would sell it to his brother in
2001 and it would travel to Social Circle, Georgia for the next 3
years. Always garage-kept and dry its entire life, it remains a
splendid car foundationally. It accumulated just 92,600 miles when
it would sell to a Bellevue, WA collector in August 2004.
Upon arrival in Washington state, it would be taken to Accutran
Transmission based in Seattle for a thorough examination and
service. This included pulling the engine and transmission for a
new rear main seal, new Centerforce clutch and pressure plate
replacement, engine & transmission mounts, front seal, oil pan
gasket, intake manifold, valve cover gaskets, cleaning and flushing
the radiator, new coolant, engine oil & filter, rebuilding the
center carburetor, transmission fluid/filter service with new
driveshaft u-joints, along with detailing the engine prior to
reinstallation. He would continue to enjoy and drive this Pontiac
GTO for the next 20 years during the short, fair-weather season
offered in the Northwest. Its most recent owner in Colorado
Springs, CO purchased it in February 2024 with approximately 97,800
miles on the odometer.
Being a trained mechanic, he would take the car into his possession
and service a few more original components to include replacement
of the water pump with a Flow Kooler unit utilizing a billet
aluminum impeller optimized for higher flow rate; new timing chain
set with fresh gaskets, heavy duty thermostat & gasket, new engine
oil & filter, professionally rebuilding all three carburetors with
new gaskets & air filters, replacement fuel pump with the addition
of an electric unit, rebuilding the rear axle with a new Auburn
Grip-N-Loc limited-slip differential ring & pinion set installed by
The Diff Shop with new axles seals and new gear oil. He addressed a
few other items like an alignment, oil sending unit, among a few
other cosmetic improvements.
Today, it continues to run wonderfully and shows only 98,078
original miles on the odometer. It is an outstandingly solid,
garage preserved GTO with a fully documented ownership history,
number's matching drivetrain, excellent service records, and
complete with original owner's manual, Protect-o-Plate, accessory
booklet, 2 sets of keys, original Tennessee title from original
owner, reproduction window sticker, Pontiac Historical Services
documentation, and storage car cover. A remarkable opportunity to
add to any collection! It certainly checks all the boxes for a
proper, investment grade example!
