1969 Chevrolet El Camino SS 396
The Chevrolet El Camino was a unique coupe utility vehicle produced
by Chevrolet between 1959-1960 and again from 1964-1987. Unlike
traditional pickup trucks, the El Camino was constructed on a
two-door station wagon platform, seamlessly integrating the cab and
cargo bed into one unified body design.

Model Evolution and Performance
In 1968, Chevrolet introduced a longer El Camino model, built on
the Chevelle station wagon and four-door sedan wheelbase, measuring
116 inches with an overall length of 208 inches. That year also
marked the launch of the high-performance Super Sport SS396
version. The Turbo-Jet 396 engine was available in two power
outputs: 325 bhp (242 kW) and 350 bhp (260 kW) and additionally the
375 bhp (280 kW) L78 engine option returned to the lineup. All
engines came standard with a three-speed manual transmission, with
the option to upgrade to a four-speed manual or automatic
transmission.
1969 Model Updates
The 1969 El Camino featured only minor updates, most notably a more
rounded front-end design. A single chrome bar connected the quad
headlights, while a slotted bumper housed the parking lights. The
dashboard was redesigned with new round instrument pods, replacing
the previous linear layout. For the first time, the Chevrolet 350
V8 engine was offered in the El Camino. The Super Sport package
included either a 265 or 325 hp (198 or 242 kW) 396-cubic-inch V8
under a distinctive double-domed hood, complemented by a
blacked-out grille with an SS emblem. Higher-output versions of the
396 engine, producing 350 or 375 hp (261 or 280 kW), were also
available. Additional options included power windows, power locks,
and a unique relocation of the back-up lights from the rear bumper
to the tailgate, though they were less effective when the tailgate
was down.
