The Jaguar E-Type remains one of the most significant and widely
admired sports cars of the 20th century. Introduced at the 1961
Geneva Motor Show, the E-Type stunned audiences with its advanced
engineering and sleek, aerodynamic styling. Production spanned from
1961 to 1975, with the model evolving through three primary series.
Among these, the Series 1 4.2-liter models are widely considered
the most desirable by collectors and marque enthusiasts. Introduced
in 1965, the 4.2-liter variant retained the aesthetic purity of the
original design while incorporating mechanical improvements,
including a larger-displacement XK inline-six engine,
all-synchromesh gearbox, improved brakes, and a more refined
interior layout.
This 1965 Jaguar E-Type Open Two-Seater (OTS) is an outstanding
example of the breed, presenting in its original specification and
benefitting from a high-quality, expert restoration. According to
the Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust Certificate, this car was
delivered new via Jaguar Cars New York to its first owner, Robert
Chain of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in the summer of 1965. It left
the factory finished in dark green over a light tan interior with a
tan soft top. Today, it remains faithful to its original color
scheme, now featuring a high-quality black interior and black
Stayfast canvas top.
In the early 2000s, the car was under the care of a West Coast
collector. In 2007, it was acquired by Classic Showcase, a
recognized Jaguar restoration specialist. At the time, it was noted
to be an original and unmodified car, making it a strong candidate
for restoration. The body was stripped to bare metal and refinished
in its original dark green. The engine and gearbox were both
comprehensively rebuilt, including new pistons, timing chain, oil
pump, balanced crankshaft, refreshed cylinder head, and all new
internal components. A photographic record of the restoration
accompanies the car, documenting the extent and quality of the work
performed.
Since the completion of the restoration in 2008, this E-Type has
been carefully maintained and remains in superb overall condition.
The paintwork is deep and lustrous, with excellent panel fit and
finish. Chrome trim and brightwork are in similarly exceptional
condition. The car rides on chrome knock-off wire wheels with
period-correct Michelin tires. In the boot, a restored Dunlop SP
Sport spare tire is present alongside a Hardura-lined jack bag and
original jack.
The interior is finished to a high standard using correct
materials, including black leather seats, vinyl trim, and carpets.
Switchgear and instruments are proper original items, with the
gauges professionally restored and a new wiring harness installed
during the refurbishment. Under the bonnet, the 4.2-liter XK engine
is presented with polished alloy cam covers and SU carburetors,
along with the correct gold-finished cylinder head. The engine
performs strongly, offering excellent power delivery and touring
capability, consistent with the E-Type's reputation. The chassis
and undercarriage are similarly well detailed, with factory-style
undercoating and properly finished suspension components.
This Series 1 4.2 OTS represents an exceptional opportunity to
acquire a fully restored, numbers-matching E-Type in its original
specification. Combining mechanical integrity with outstanding
cosmetic quality, it is well suited for touring, concours
presentation, or inclusion in a discerning collection.
Offers welcome and trades considered.
