Chevy may have released its Camaro when the muscle car wars of the
'60s were already in full swing, but it didn't take long for the
car-buying public to appreciate the impact of their new offering.
Stout and muscular, with a generously proportioned hood to
accommodate plenty of power, Camaros became a "must-have" muscle
car in only their first year on the market. This 1967 Chevrolet
Camaro SS 396 Tribute, meticulously outfitted to represent the
upper-tier Super Sport version of its model, is a testament to why
Camaros developed such a devoted following so quickly. Dressed in
an outstanding shade of blue, and wearing the signature SS blackout
grille, badging, and hood vent trim, with no glaring dings or dents
to detract from its stellar curb appeal, it makes a great first
impression and wields plenty of big block power to go along with
its aesthetics.
Climb inside and you'll be surrounded by an interior that's clad in
factory-correct black vinyl and really shows nicely. The front
bucket seats have plenty of future miles left to offer and sit
astride a center console that's in great shape. Just beyond the
factory-style steering wheel with its SS badging, the instrument
cluster retains its authentic stock configuration and houses a
collection of clear, easily readable gauges. The dash pad is free
from any noticeable warpage, which is always a welcome sight with
black upholstery, and the carpeting below looks good, too. Perhaps
one of the most unappreciated features of a '60s muscle car like
this Camaro is its rear-seat leg room. There's room for two
full-fledged adults back there, and, considering this Chevy's
ability to draw attention, you're likely to have plenty of eager
volunteers to ride along with you on your adventures.
Under that vented hood lurks a 396 cubic-inch V8 that's fed by a
4-barrel carburetor sitting on top of an Edelbrock Performer intake
manifold. It pairs with a 3-speed automatic TH400 transmission to
make up a vital and period-correct drivetrain. With a pair of
aftermarket mufflers in place, a tap on the accelerator provides
the commanding exhaust note you'd want in a muscle car like this.
Power steering makes for easy navigation and because this classic
tracks nice and straight and stops promptly when needed, it's a lot
of fun to drive.
