The first-generation Thunderbird was Ford's answer to the European
roadsters of the early 1950s, offering a blend of sporty
performance and American comfort. This 1955 example captures that
same spirit, finished in striking Raven Black with a matching
interior. While not a concours car, it presents as a solid #2
driver-very clean, well-kept, and with thoughtful upgrades that
make it a far more enjoyable and dependable classic to drive.
Underneath, the suspension has been completely rebuilt with new
bushings, tie rod ends, and shocks, giving the car a much tighter
and more confident feel on the road. A Borgeson power steering box
and pump replace the original factory setup, and a tilt column
fitted with a 15-inch steering wheel makes ingress and egress
easier than stock. Braking has also been improved with Wilwood
front power disc brakes, providing modern stopping confidence
without detracting from the car's vintage character. Additional
upgrades include an electric fuel pump for better delivery, an
aluminum radiator for improved cooling, and a conversion from the
original 6-volt system to a more reliable 12-volt electrical
system, with the battery relocated to the trunk.
Power comes from Ford's 292 cubic-inch V8 paired with a two-speed
Ford-O-Matic transmission. The engine runs strong with no leaks or
smoke, and the bay itself is tidy and presentable. A new gas tank
has been installed for added reliability. On the outside, both the
convertible soft top and hardtop accompany the car-the hardtop's
headliner is in excellent condition, while the convertible top is
nice overall but would benefit from attention to the tack strips in
a couple of areas.
Inside, the Raven Black theme continues, with clean upholstery and
trim. All gauges are functional with the exception of the
speedometer, and both the tachometer and clock operate properly.
The lighting, turn signals, and glass are in very good condition,
and the car rides on good tires with a matching spare and jack
included.
Overall, this Thunderbird is a well-sorted and tastefully upgraded
driver. It delivers reliable performance, comfort, and style,
making it a joy to take on the road. Everywhere it goes, it garners
attention and admiration-exactly as a 1955 Thunderbird should.
