The fourth and, at the time of writing, final generation of the Pontiac Firebird was introduced in 1993, offering curvaceous looks inspired by the Banshee IV concept car and dramatically improved safety over the previous model. As before, base model Firebirds were equipped with V6s, while the Formula and Trans Ams were built with V8s shared with the Corvette. A major mid-cycle facelift was announced for the 1998 model year, offering dramatic exterior styling updates and the 5.7L LS1 V8 from the C5 Corvette.
Trans Ams, in particular, rewarded buyers with an exceptional combination of performance and luxury. Standard leather upholstery, air conditioning, and a Monsoon audio system offered plenty of comfort, while a limited-slip differential and a 310hp LS1 V8 allowed the car to attain 60mph from a stop in around 5.2 seconds. Available in both Coupe and Convertible bodystyles, the last of the Firebird Trans Ams is a superb choice for an enthusiast looking for a fun-to-drive, stylish vehicle without the costs associated with its European counterparts. Of course, as the last of its nameplate, these cars are likely to appreciate in the future, especially as well-cared-for examples become more difficult to source.
The stunning 2002 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am Convertible featured here is finished in its factory combination of Pewter Metallic over an Ebony leather interior with a matching power-folding soft top - one of only 261 Trans Am convertibles produced in this color for 2002.
