In January 1948, a new era began at the Ford Motor Company with the
release of an all new line of trucks that Ford dubbed the F-Series.
This new series, which Ford promoted as its Bonus Built Line
covered a wide range of models with different cab and chassis
combinations. The line started out with light duty 1/2 ton rated
pickup trucks and ran all the way up to the extra heavy duty, three
ton rated F-8. These trucks used a completely redesigned cab with
all new front end sheet metal and in a departure from previous
practice, the same cab served both conventional and cab over engine
models.
For consignment, a 1948 Ford F1 pickup showing 285 miles, but the
true miles are unknown on this street rodded version of America's
work truck. You won't be hauling coal or tar in this baby and with
a 355ci Blueprint crate engine, there's only thing this truck will
be hauling, ass!
Exterior
A nice change of course from our usual red, white, blue and black
trucks is this stunning two stage bronze metallic coat that courses
over every curve of this curvaceous pickup. The headlights are set
more inboard on the '48 and fit in a contoured cove that features a
bold and polished grille of horizontal bars while polished inlets
front the rising hood and all the metal up front is spotless,
including the bumper. A smaller rear window fits into the cab
that's been chopped four inches and overlooks a show worthy bed of
oak planks and stainless bed rails. 16-inch American Racing wheels
maintain a pattern of paint contrasting with shiny bits and the
straight and clean bumper in back caps off a spectacular
presentation. A single ding is the only imperfection we find on
this F1.
Interior
Sure, black would work inside a bronze truck but of coursesaddle
works better and is found first on the door cards neatly attached
its bronze base and mimicked on the bench seat with vertical stitch
patterns, matching seatbelts, and great condition. The tan carpet
keeps the palette consistent and works its way up the back wall.
For the driver, a Lecarra steering wheel and Lokar shifter are at
the ready and the instrument cluster with its ivory Dolphin gauges
and polished faceplate would be right at home in a high end watch
shop. A Southern A/C and heat unit enhances the ride potential and
a JVS AM/FM/CD player is onboard as well with a hidden antenna. Tan
panels cover the ceiling, completing this clean interior's
layout.
Drivetrain
The show continues under the hood where a highly polished 355ci V8
Blueprint crate motor resides, rated at 410 horsepower and sending
fuel through the intake via a Holley 4-barrel. A 700R4 4-speed
automatic with a B&M trans cooler is behind it and routes the
power to the Dana 44 out back. Headers begin the exhaust process at
the engine.
Undercarriage
The front power disc brakes benefit from stainless steel brake
lines as do the Mustang drums in back. Mustang also lends the rack
and pinion power steering up front while monoleaf springs handle
the suspension there and are repeated in the back. Dual exhaust
finds an X-pipe then a pair of heat wrapped, stainless steel
mufflers before exiting through beveled tailpipes under the bed.
It's absolutely clean underneath with no rust of any kind and no
errant fluids.
Drive-Ability
This bronze truck gets a gold medal for sound as the 355 comes
alive with a bellowing exhaust. There's plenty of power on hand
here and the truck hunkers down over the wheels providing some very
good handling and the brakes are up to the task of slowing this
street rod down. The cab is infinitely comfortable and the chop is
easy to get used to. We note the A/C and horn are not working but
all other functions work as they should. While Classic Auto Mall
represents that these functions were working at the time of our
test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at
the time of your purchase.
We've seen dozens of F-series trucks pass through our halls over
the years, but very few '48's. In stock configuration perhaps they
present a bit stodgy and tall and so people have a hard time
imagining a street rod version. Well, no imagination needed here as
this excellent build checks all the boxes for a fantastic show
truck, visually stunning and mechanically sound. Even if you don't
attend shows, just taking this out for a pleasure drive with your
favorite person is worth all the money, or in this case,
bronze.
