The world was introduced to Chevrolet's answer to the Mustang in
September 1966 with the newly-designed Camaro. The car proved to be
more than a worthy competitor, winning 10 of 13 Trans-Am Series
races during 1967. As a result, dealers struggled to keep up with
the demand in their showrooms. A success out of the box, the
beloved first generation received minor updates for the 1968 model
year.
Built in the third week of June in 1968, this Sport Coupe left the
Van Nuys, California, assembly plant in LeMans Blue over a
Parchment interior with custom bucket seats. In 2008 this Camaro
was the recipient of thorough restoration that transformed the car
to its current presentation. The car was disassembled and assessed
before the bodywork was refinished in its current 1969-model-year
Daytona Yellow with a late-1968 model-year D90 Black SS stripe.
Inside, the car was reupholstered with fresh Parchment seat covers
and door panels, contrasted by the Black center console, carpeting,
and dashboard. Powering this potent performer is an L34 350 hp
Turbo-Jet 396 cu-in V8, mated to a TH400 Turbo-Hydramatic
three-speed automatic transmission. The engine benefits from the
2008 overhaul and has completed approximately 1,000 miles since
then, as reported by the current owner. To complete the
refurbishment of this Camaro, original SS equipment was installed
on the car which includes a special hood with simulated air
intakes, a blacked-out tail panel, power front disc brakes, and SS
badging on the grille, fenders, and gas cap.
Among marque enthusiasts, the first-generation Camaro is considered
to be the ultimate blend of muscle and good looks, especially when
equipped with the potent L34 350 hp Turbo-Jet 396 cu-in V8. This
restored example, complete in eye-catching Daytona Yellow, is a
husky performer, perfectly suited for cruising and enjoyment, just
as the original designers intended.
