As undeniably mesmerizing as the RT/10 version of Dodge's supercar
may be, there is a strong argument that can be made for that the
coupe version like this 2001 Dodge Viper GTS, is even more
captivating. With a ridiculously low 266 actual miles (yes, 266),
this Viper Red GTS looks, feels, and drives as if it were sitting
in a time capsule for the last quarter century. If you missed out
on owning one of these dynamic second-generation Vipers the first
time around, this car comes with just about everything you could
want to make you feel as though it just rolled off the assembly
line.
Inside, the second-gen Viper shows off a slightly less Spartan
interior than its predecessor. A black leather interior is
highlighted by a big center console that separates a pair of super
supportive bucket seats. A power-assisted steering wheel sits a
head of a 7,000 rpm tachometer and 200 mph speedometer, while a
quartet of white-faced auxiliary gauges sits mid-dash above the
stock Alpine CD player and basic HVAC controls. Power locks,
mirrors, windows, and air conditioning offer a host of modern
amenities, especially compared to the barebones first gen.
Under that expansive front-hinged louvered hood, we find a massive
naturally-aspirated 8.0-liter V-10 engine. Thanks in part to its
aluminum block, heads, and intake manifold this overhead valve
monster makes 450 horsepower at 5,200 rpm and 490 pound-feet of
torque at 3,700 rpm. That big power is routed through a Tremec T56
six-speed manual transmission before heading out to the
limited-slip rear end that transfers those ponies to the pavement
via a set of polished 18-inch wheels shod in original
steamroller-sized 335/30ZR-18 Michelin rubber. At the same time, a
narrower set of also original 275/35ZR-18 Michelins handles
steering duties up front.
