The Cadillac Allante is a two door, two seater luxury roadster
produced by Cadillac from 1987 until 1993. It used a Cadillac
chassis and running gear with a body built in Italy by coach
builder Pininfarina. It was expensive to produce with the complete
bodies flown to Detroit for final assembly. Over 21,000 were built
during its seven-year production run.
For consignment, a 1993 Cadillac Allante convertible with a title
verified 8,016 actual miles. Design for the Allante was inspired by
European models and the car represented a departure from angular
design and was the first two person roadster produced by Cadillac
since the series 355 in the 1930's.
Exterior
This straight shouldered car with softly rounded edges is covered
in near flawless two stage Pearl Red paint with a stylish double
pinstripe that runs stem to stern and intersects the door handle on
the way. Composite headlights definitely point to the European
influence and the flush tail lights are decorated with white lines,
a stylized addition that resembles frosted glass. On the front
fenders, the coveted Pininfarina crest, a symbol that appears on
some of the finest cars in the history of the automobile. Our black
canvas top has a glass window and is in excellent shape as is the
accessory hard top, painted to match the car. 16-inch cross lace
wheels add a touch of sportiness to this roadster and evenly
wrapped in 225/60ZR16 tires. With the top down, the raked
windshield becomes more pronounced and the flat deck lid sheds air
like a plane's wing. Overall, the paint, panel gaps, and trim are
in excellent condition with a two part scratch being the only
imperfection on this well preserved Caddy.
Interior
The two tone door panels placed pleated taupe over tan in an
angular presentation of materials that includes a carpeted corner.
Leather tall bucket seats combine luxury and sport and other than
some slight compression, show in very nice condition. Plush tan
carpet covers the floor, protected up front will full sized mats
but exposed and clean on the package shelf and rear wall behind the
seats. Up front, the taupe steering wheel leads to a digital dash,
slightly antiquated by today's standards, but ahead of its time in
1993. It combines standard digital readouts with graphic gauges and
switches that are definitely 80's holdovers. This is especially
evident on the center stack, canted toward the driver and looking
very much like a switchboard with dozens of buttons that control
climate, the radio, trip computer, and CD player. Get to know this
panel because you don't want to be searching for the matching black
buttons at 70 miles per hour. Tan plastic housing holds the leather
wrapped shifter on the floor while the trunk is finely finished,
including the inside of the decklid, with tan carpet wall to
wall.
Drivetrain
All's clean in the engine bay where the 4.6 liter Northstar V8
resides, transverse mounted, fuel injected and putting out a
respectable 295 horsepower. It is tied to a 4T80E 4-speed automatic
transmission keeping power up front and routing it through 3.71
gears.
Undercarriage
Age oxidation and some typical surface rust are the only things
that veer from what is otherwise a clean underside, one that
definitely supports the car's low mileage. The pans are dry and the
knuckles are completely free of grease and grime. Four wheel power
disc brakes are supplied here and independent suspension is also
front and rear with a 4.5 link. The single exhaust runs through an
original equipment muffler in the back which emits a tailpipe that
exits through a splitter and two tips.
Drive-Ability
A comfortable interior and powerful engine make driving this
Cadillac a real treat. Acceleration is brisk and handling is very
good, and disc brakes all around get the job done when it's time to
slow down. It does everything well and thanks to its preservation,
all of the functional items including the multiple digital
readouts, work as they should. While Classic Auto Mall represents
that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we
cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of
your purchase.
Cadillac billed the Allante as The New Spirit of Cadillac and while
simultaneously marketing to a younger crowd, kept some of the
creature comforts Caddy's loyal luxury crowd came to expect. In
2018, Hagerty wrote, "the car has a fascinating history, looks
good, handles reasonably well, is relatively rare, and there are
affordable examples on the market that are ripe for the taking". As
one of the lowest mileage examples we've seen, this one might
represent the best out there.
