"Remember the Ford LTD LX of 1984-'85? No? That's okay, you're not
alone. Discounting the idea of a Turbo Fairmont with TRX
suspension, the LTD LX intended to capitalize on the wave of
European sports sedans that became popular in the late '70s and
early '80s. So, when Ford installed its 165hp, throttle body
injected 5.0 HO engine and Mustang GT suspension bits into the
starchy LTD, blacked out the trim, christened it LX, and made it
available to the public at large, you'd think that it might have
stood up and gotten noticed: a proper rear drive sports sedan to
counteract the BMW onslaught at last." Hemmings.com
For auction, a 1985 Ford LTD LX sedan with a title verified 130,903
actual miles. Between '84 and '85, only 3.260 LTD LX models were
produced. This Mustang cloaked in sedan skin presents in fair good
condition and runs.
Exterior
The pedestrian, boxy and quintessential mid 80's platform of the
car is what makes this wolf in sheep's clothing attractive, here in
single stage Oxford White. Noted for its black trim including the
grille and headlight bezels, that black is heavily faded now. A red
pinstripe is intact as is the side body molding, but we do note
some rust on the rocker panel and along the lower lines of the car,
as well as a spattering of surface rust on horizontal surfaces. The
original wheels are worn but present and that's the overall theme
as the car shows exposure but is complete, right down to the
decklid emblems.
Interior
Faded but mostly intact is how we find the blue interior beginning
with door panels that fit a velour geometric insert between vinyl
and carpeted panels along with a unique array of switchgear on the
driver's door. The bucket seats are in decent shape with some
cracking of the vinyl piping but no tears or wear marks on the
cloth surfaces. There's some staining on the back seats but no
damage to the material. Fading and patina does appear on the
plastic steering wheel but the instrument cluster and dash are in
good condition with an A/C panel and AM/FM/Cassette player in the
center stack. The shifter and center console could use a good
cleaning but are all there, flanked by the hand compression bulbs
that manually pump up the lumbar support in the seats.
Drivetrain
Driver quality conditions are found in the bay that houses the 5.0
liter V8, rated at 165 horsepower and electronically fuel injected.
It's mated to an AOD 4-speed automatic transmission that sends
power to the 7.5" rear axle.
Undercarriage
A single exhaust flows through a stock style muffler and power
brakes are onboard as front disc and rear drum. Suspension consists
of coil spring front and rear with a 4 link in the back.
Drive-Ability
She starts and runs and we take this four door pony car around the
loop where it does randomly shut off, a likely problem with the
ignition switch. It runs fine otherwise and we note the A/C and
horn are not working. The driver's window is inoperable, there's no
key for the trunk, and the rear doors don't open. Outside of those
things, functional items do operate. While Classic Auto Mall
represents that these functions were working at the time of our
test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at
the time of your purchase.
