Gone but not forgotten, this fully repainted, bright red 1969
Pontiac Firebird Convertible Restomod reminds us why this car was
so beloved. With its sculpted Coke bottle styling, twin square
grilles, quad headlights, and aggressive dual-nostril hood, this
droptop dynamo is a stellar example of the final year for the
Firebird's first generation.
Inside, we find a well-done black vinyl interior. An aftermarket
center console with dual cup holders separates a pair of comfy
bucket seats. A three-spoke, power-assisted, wood-rimmed steering
wheel adds the perfect amount of contrast. A big 8,000 rpm
tachometer and 160 mph speedometer are complemented by an
additional trio of auxiliary gauges located under the dash, which
provides a bit more reassurance about the health of that big engine
up front. An upgraded AM/FM/AUX head unit handles soundtrack
duties, if you ever get tired of listening to the rumble of the
exhaust.
Under the hood, we find a clean engine bay featuring a 400
cubic-inch overhead valve V-8 engine. Taken from a 1971 model, this
YX motor originally produced 265 advertised horsepower. That power
peak is a thing of the past, however. With the addition of Kauffman
Racing aluminum heads, a performance-oriented cam, Edelbrock
aluminum intake manifold, and a matching Edelbrock port fuel
injection system, along with an X-pipe dual exhaust capped off with
MagnaFlow mufflers, this Firebird is ready to fly. That power is
routed through a TH200-4R four-speed automatic transmission before
being sent out to the ten-bolt rear end.
