In the world of car collections, firsts and lasts tend to have
significant value for would-be owners. When it debuted in 1997, the
fifth-generation of Chevy's Corvette was considered by many as the
beginning of the modern era of the General's halo car. Lasting
almost a decade, this 2004 Chevrolet Corvette represents the final
model year of the venerable C5. With a mere 39,011 actual miles on
its odometer, its original Light Tarnished Silver Metallic paint
looks as though this car just came off of its first lease. With its
swoopy lines and removable targa top, this Corvette is perfect for
anyone who wasn't able to buy one of these gems the first time
around.
Inside, we find an original black leather interior. A locking
center console separates a pair of supportive power bucket seats. A
power-assisted, four-spoke, padded steering wheel featuring the
Crossed Flags emblem sits just ahead of the six-pod analog gauge
cluster featuring a 7,000 RPM tachometer and 200 mph speedometer. A
trick Heads-Up Display making keeping your eyes on the road much
easier than in previous generations, while power mirrors, locks,
and windows, cruise control, and air conditioning add all the
modern amenities required for a comfortable drive.
Under the signature front-hinged hood, we find an overhead valve
5.7-liter LS1 V-8 engine. With its beautiful Corvette valve covers,
aluminum blocks and heads, and composite intake manifold, this
modern small block was capable of pumping out 350 horsepower at
5,600 RPM and 360 pound-feet of torque at 4,000 RPM when it rolled
off the assembly line. Power is routed through a rear-mounted 4L60E
four-speed automatic transmission before heading out to the
2.73-geared rear end that transfers that muscle to the tarmac via a
set of 18-inch five-spoke wheels shod in 275/40ZR-18 Michelin
rubber. At the same time, steering duties are delegated to a
staggered set of 17-inch wheels are wrapped in narrower 245/45ZR-17
Michelins.
