The Cobras dominated Corvettes in North America, winning races
coast to coast. On July 4, 1965, the Cobra won the World
Manufacturers' GT Championship, as the team soundly defeated
Ferrari. Shelby American is the only American vehicle manufacturer
to win the prestigious championship, before or since." Thx
Shelby.com.
For consignment, a 1966 Shelby Cobra replica showing 3,859 miles,
but the true miles are unverifiable. This may very well be #1 on
the list of most desired cars by automotive enthusiasts everywhere.
With real Cobras fetching six or seven figures, respected replicas
are a way of getting a taste without mortgaging the farm.
Exterior
Sapphire Blue is a fantastic shade that fits this car well,
enhanced by silver stripes that go from the bottom lip to the rear
valance breaking only for the lower intake, the gaping grille, and
of course, the upright windshield, here with wind wings. In
profile, the Coke bottle shape is well defined and epic side gills,
here in polished metal, catches your eyes right before they are
drawn to the coated side pipe. 15-inch Compomotive wheels are a
spectacular choice here, their polished rims providing some extra
shine. Out back, quad tail lights cap the fenders while vestigial
reminders of the race version include the hood scoop, the gas cap,
and the roll bar. Bumperettes were added for street cars and like
all the metal on this car, appears in great condition here. In
fact, the entire exterior is superb, and we could not find any
imperfections.
Interior
Black leather cards are adorned with pleated map pockets and
decorative buttons to cover connective hardware. Inside, bomber
style black leather seats rest proudly on each side of the center
hump with some slight wear showing on the edge of the driver's, and
both are fitted with a four point racing harness. Excellent
conditions prevail with the wood rimmed steering wheel and black
backed dashboard housing Smiths gauges, indicator lights, and
several toggle switches while the shifter wears a rubber boot over
black carpet. The trunk, footwells, and back wall are all lined in
a nice low pile black carpet and an AM/FM/CD player mounted on the
dash bottom.
Drivetrain
The clean machine features a 428ci V8 under the hood and the beast
is fueled by dual Holley 4-barrel carburetor, all mated to a
Toploader 4-speed manual. Out back, we have 3.54 gears to get
things scooting. Finned Cobra valve covers and air box add some eye
candy to the impressively clean engine bay.
Undercarriage
Wonderfully clean underneath with nothing out of place, and some
interesting components. Obviously, the dual exhaust are a simple
configuration of headers and side pipes, while disc brakes occupy
front and back with the rears being inboard. Suspension includes
front coil overs and a Jaguar independent rear suspension with quad
coil overs.
Drive-Ability
Don't just hold on to your hat, hold on to your hair with this
outrageously wild ride! We understand the venom of this snake's
bite and its Power Performance kit, so we feather it around the
test loop to test functionality, but even at slow speeds, we can't
help but smile. Back to our checklist, we find the radio and horn
are not operating but all other functions on board this blue rocket
operate as they should. While Classic Auto Mall represents that
these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we
cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of
your purchase.
Kudos to AC and Carroll Shelby for creating a near perfect design
that never gets old, will never be boring, and will never cease to
be lusted after. This is a stupendous replica, a great build, and a
snake that should be driven and enjoyed. Carefully, of
course...
