With their rugged, ready-for-action appearance and sterling
reputation for long-term reliability, Land Cruisers have been
coveted off-roaders ever since they were first introduced for
civilian use more than 70 years ago. But take a closer look at this
1987 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ73 and you'll notice that cloth soft top
that sets it apart from nearly all of its counterparts you'll see
on the road. This is no typical Land Cruiser. Its FJ73 designation
confirms its status as an automotive world traveler, originally
configured for the global market, and never sold in the United
States, so the rarity of this SUV is beyond question. Decked out in
its factory-correct white exterior and outfitted with driver and
passenger side running boards, along with upgraded headlights that
team with a pair of fog lamps to light the road ahead, this is one
ruggedly capable-looking ride.
The factory-correct gray vinyl interior has come through the
decades in impressive shape. Both front buckets are sure to provide
many future miles of comfort, and the rear bench seat appears very
fresh, as well. There appears to be no noticeable cracks or warpage
on the dash area that we could find, and an aftermarket JVC AM/FM
stereo with touchscreen control and an auxiliary port now sits at
its center to handle audio duties. Glance a little lower and you'll
see that a cooler is recessed into the center console. That's a
great unexpected convenience feature. The rear storage area is
well-maintained and houses a properly badged Toyota toolkit to help
you deal with any unforeseen circumstances while on the road.
This special edition Toyota is powered by at least a period-correct
4.0-liter inline 6-cylinder engine that's fed by a factory-issue
2-barrel carburetor. Not surprisingly, given its manufacturer's
reputation for dependability, the engine is running in fine form,
starting up promptly and pulling with gusto. When it comes time to
unleash this Land Cruiser's 4-wheel drive agility so that you can
take on rougher terrain, the lever is within easy reach on the
transmission and engages flawlessly. Power brakes that position
discs up front bring things to a stop as quickly as needed, and an
upgraded aluminum radiator is on board to keep temperatures under
control in more challenging motoring conditions.
