Here is a vehicle that is small but mighty. This 1983 Toyota Land
Cruiser FJ40 is fully restored and designed to take on any
situation you throw at it. With a beautiful repaint, you almost
don't want to do the things this tough vehicle was built for. The
winch on the front can get you out of sticky situations-or help
someone else out of something crazy. The big tires and capable
four-wheel-drive system will also allow you to take this rig almost
anywhere you want without much worry. And although tough on trails
and rugged roads, it also proves to be surprisingly easy to drive
in everyday situations.
The inside of this Land Cruiser barely looks like it has ever been
driven. The black bucket seats look great alongside the door
panels, while the rear seats still have plastic covering them. The
headliner is in excellent condition, and the rubber flooring is
perfect for a vehicle like this-making cleanup a breeze. The
dashpad looks new, the instrument cluster is easy to read, and all
of the buttons and knobs appear to function properly. A Pioneer
head unit controls a sound system with AM/FM/CD, Bluetooth, and two
subwoofers positioned behind the front seats. In the center of the
front seat area are two floor shifters-one for regular gear changes
and the other for four-wheel-drive engagement. In the rear seating
area, a roll bar adds safety in case of a rollover accident.
Additional emergency gear includes a full-sized spare tire mounted
on the rear that swings out to give you access to the tailgate.
Under the hood is another area where this vehicle shines. The
engine bay is immaculate-well-organized with plenty of attention to
detail. An aluminum radiator keeps the 4.2-liter 2F Inline-6
temperature-controlled. The engine itself has only about 500 miles
on a fresh rebuild. The 2-barrel carburetor has also been rebuilt,
as has the 4-speed manual transmission-likely at the same time as
the engine. The suspension is a classic four-wheel-drive setup:
leaf springs with shocks, front and rear. 15-inch black-painted
wheels with shiny center caps are wrapped in BFG All-Terrain T/A
32X11.50R15LT tires on all four corners. Stopping power comes from
front power disc brakes and rear power drum brakes. For exhaust, a
stock-style manifold connects to a single pipe running through a
factory replacement muffler.
