At the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, Michigan, you'll find a 1929
Model A coupe that was actually used by Hank, himself! As the
museum puts it, "Ford Motor Company sold almost five million Model
A cars over the 1928-1931 model years, but this one had a special
owner: Henry Ford. Unusual equipment included custom upholstery,
cowl ventilators, experimental brake drums, and a socket in the
rear window shelf to hold a bottle of Mr. Ford's favorite mineral
water. The black paint was accented with red striping."
For consignment, a 1929 Ford Model A coupe showing 971 miles, but
the true miles are unknown. This well sorted and attractive A
features a rebuilt engine, steering box, and brakes along with
additional lights for safer nighttime driving.
Exterior
Here we have a stately and vibrant presentation wrapped up in this
purely American design and dressed in Mulberry Maroon over black
with bright yellow wire wheels and white wall tires. If your first
reaction isn't WOW, check your pulse! It's a stunning combination
and applied with two stage precision and clarity. In back, the
jacketed spare tire still shows off its yellow spokes and hub and
brake lights with turn signals have been added to the ribbon bumper
so you're not relying on the typical single taillight, also
present. The deep burgundy contrasts nicely with the chrome
radiator shell and headlight housing while providing more of a
matching blend with the black bumpers and running board. A single
imperfection is found in the form of some cracking paint near a
door hinge.
Interior
Gray is the color of choice for the interior beginning with cloth
door panels with a simple square stitch design and standard
hardware. The bench seat is column tufted and clean with matching
gray piping bordering the base. A black four spoke steering wheel
leads to the black painted dash and central control panel with
gauges and ignition, here in a faceplate that's painted flat
silver. Gray carpet is cut to fit the floor where a wood knobbed
shifter begins its journey up to the driver and we take note of the
added temperature gauge under the dash. The under dash has been
closed off, while the gray headliner is tidy and clean. Out back,
the rumble seat remains gray, but is constructed of vinyl rather
than cloth, for obvious reasons, and it's in great shape.
Drivetrain
Here we have the super clean 201ci inline four cylinder, rebuilt by
Schwalms and including a new distributor with modern points and
condenser. It retains a 1-barrel carburetor and is tied to a
3-speed manual that routes the spin back to the rear axle and 3.78
gears. The steering box is now a rebuilt early F1 unit that
provides a better steering effort and no play. The car now runs on
a 6 volt alternator.
Undercarriage
We've got clean conditions underneath as well with minimal surface
rust and just a drop or two on the transmission. Mechanical drum
brakes exist on all four wheels and are new. A single exhaust runs
through a stock style muffler before exiting under the car, and
transverse leaf springs are utilized front and rear as well.
Drive-Ability
The thought of driving a vehicle that is nearly 100 years old never
gets mundane. We take this piece of Americana around the test loop
and find a good running car with improved steering, sure braking
and a comfortable and clean interior. Limited as they are, all
functions on the '29 operate as intended. While Classic Auto Mall
represents that these functions were working at the time of our
test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at
the time of your purchase.
The demand for good Model A's never seems to diminish and the coupe
body style is one of the more common we see here at the mall, even
after dozens of Model A's and eight years of business. Don't wait
for this car's 100th birthday to make a move on it as it likely
won't celebrate its 97th here at the mall.
