Interesting fact, the 1965 to 1970 B-body is the fourth best
selling vehicle platform in history after the VW Beetle, Ford Model
T, and the Lada Riva, an eastern European compact sedan. In 1966
alone, 181,000 Caprices were sold and combined with platform
partners from Pontiac, Oldsmobile, and Buick, became the most
common platform on the road. Watch any TV show from that era and
pay attention to exterior driving scenes, then count the
B-bodies!
For consignment, a 1966 Chevrolet Caprice Custom 2 door hardtop
showing 9,002 miles, but the true miles are unknown. Similar to the
online configuration selections for cars today, in 1966 you could
sit with a salesman and select how you wanted your car appointed,
and someone checked a few boxes on this top trim Caprice.
Exterior
Numerous quarts likely went into coating this car in Cameo Beige
which looks great and is augmented by a twin tan pinstripe. Let's
go right to the metal work because in 1966, there's still plenty
adorning the car. The chrome bumpers shine bright and so does the
trim around the grille and the grille itself, a series of
horizontal strakes that form a subtle point in the center. There
are bright wheel moldings and drip rail, both of which would have
standard on the Caprice that add a nice touch of bling. Flat panels
dominate the profile, but a nice shoulder line begins at the rear
window and gently rises to form a slightly arched fender.
Horizontal tail lights are above the bumper which carefully sculpts
around them while housing embedded reverse lights in the chrome.
15-inch American Torque Thrust wheels wear staggered size tires
that have a mid 2021 manufacturing date. The big car is near
flawless on the outside and we could not pinpoint notable
imperfections.
Interior
Fawn, black, and blue were the interior options and this one
presents in beautiful Fawn which appears with buttons on the door,
hinting of a Chesterfield motif, complemented by a walnut inset
that surrounds the door panel, matching the sandalwood carpeted
lower. The seats continue the well coordinated interior which
Chevrolet called "color harmonized", and these seats are the Strato
bucket option in really fine condition, buttoned, and mirrored in
the back bench in like new condition. The package also includes the
woodgrain inlays on the steering wheel and covering the glove box
and center console. Everything looks elegant and fresh in this
interior, almost as if it just rolled out of the showroom. The
horizontal display of gauges is classic 60's and the center stack
gauges are also additional elements of the sport package. The Hurst
shifter sits left of center on the floor console, and we don't see
any scratches or blemishes on the interior surfaces, including the
sandalwood loop carpet and beige headliner. The trunk is clean and
lined with a gray flannel mat.
Drivetrain
Under the hood, we're greeted with clean black inner fenders and a
spotless engine, in this case a date correct 327ci V8 rated at 275
horsepower. This would have been an additional cost option over the
base engines, a 250ci six and a 283ci V8. Ours receives fuel via a
4-barrel carburetor and is set into motion by a Muncie M20 4-speed
manual transmission from 1968. The rear axle is a 10 bolt with 2.56
gears and power disc brakes live up front, and drums in the rear,
an option you would have had to check off. We also note power
steering, another option.
Undercarriage
Clean conditions prevail underneath with minimal surface rust, no
errant fluids, and only minor splashes of road dirt. The dual
exhaust enters a pair of Super Turbo mufflers and then dumps
unceremoniously under the car, just behind the rear axle. Coil
spring suspension is up front and a 3 link, coil springs and a
panhard bar are out back.
Drive-Ability
It's not a Rolls Royce, but in 1966, this sure must've felt fancy.
This is quite luxurious and a few steps up from the base Caprice to
be sure. The 327 bellows forward and a smooth ride is at hand with
power on tap and enough to move this big car. Braking, handling,
and hands free tracking are all good and all functions work as they
should. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions
were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee
these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
Well, this one just made my lottery list. Given the odds of that,
however, it won't be in our garage any time soon. But that just
means it's available to you and if you're interested, act fast.
It's very nice and destined to find a new home faster than you can
say three twenty seven.
