The Austin A135 Princess Long Wheelbase Saloon. (DS6). and
Limousine. (DM4). were introduced in 1952. From October 1959, the
name Princess was used on a deluxe version of BMC's full sized
executive cars badged as an Austin Westminster, Vanden Plas
Princess and Wolseley 6/99-6/110. The long wheelbase models
continued to be built by hand in limited numbers as the Vanden Plas
Princess 4 liter limousine until 1968.
For auction, a 1964 Vanden Plas Princess 4 liter limousine showing
8,852 miles, but the true miles are unknown. This limousine
presents in good restorable condition with decent leather and wood
on the inside. This is a rare left hand drive Princess and was
ordered for delivery in the United States. There are no keys
associated with the car.
Exterior
Single stage black paint covers this Silver Cloud shaped behemoth
with mixed quality. The upper surfaces suffer from long term dusty
storage and non use while vertical panels still exhibit some
remnant shine. There's a small dent in the front right fender, a
fender that gracefully flows back to the door and houses an
integrated headlight between it and the Rolls Royce like grille.
Side mirrors are perched out on the fenders and the large doors
open in opposite directions to allow access to the tall interior. A
hump back contains two trunks, one for service items such as a
spare and another for luggage. Robust bumpers bookend this heavy
car and fender skirts are included with the car as well.
Interior
Gray leather adorns the door panels and mold has accumulated on
several doors and other surfaces inside the car. Authentic burlwood
frames the windows and shows some patina in spots and there are
areas of nice condition. Both the gray leather bench up front for
the chauffeur and the one in back show some age with some dryness,
patina cracking, mold, and some discoloration. The rear occupants
are afforded a high ceiling, vast legroom with fold away foot
stools, interior lamps, and an assortment of switches for various
functions. There's also a hidden partition and curtain to create
separation from the driver. He gets a burlwood dash with numerous
gauges and switchgear and instead of carpet like the passengers, a
rubber mat is supplied, and this one has grown brittle over time.
The greenhouse is also vast as big windows allow light on the
inside.
Drivetrain
A 4.0 liter inline six cylinder is under the hood with 2 Su
carburetors and rated at 120 horsepower. It is backed by a 3-speed
automatic transmission that sends power to the hypoid rear axle, a
design that allows for greater floor space in the interior.
Undercarriage
A single exhaust carries a stock style muffler and exits via a
tailpipe behind the left rear wheel. Drum brakes are used front and
rear while coil springs and leaf springs make the suspension, front
and rear respectively.
Drive-AbilityThis rare British limousine has no keys associated
with it.
