The Ford Model A replaced the wildly successful Model T for the
1928 model year with production lasting until 1931. A far more
complex vehicle than its predecessor, it debuted many significant
improvements. Its L-head inline four-cylinder engine gained more
displacement and produced a claimed 40 horsepower-twice that of the
Model T. Fuel was gravity fed to the carburetor from a tank
positioned in the cowl, between the engine compartment and the
dashboard, featuring a visual fuel gauge. Other new features
included four-wheel mechanical brakes, a battery-powered ignition
system, and safety glass for the windshield, an industry first.
Significantly, the Model A was also the first Ford to adopt a
standard set of driver controls, with conventional clutch,
throttle, and brake pedals and a gear shifter like on vehicles from
other manufacturers of the day. Ford offered a wide variety of
consumer and commercial body styles for the Model A, with the
Roadster body seen on the 1929 Ford Rumble Seat Roadster offered
here remaining particularly popular among collectors.
This restored 1929 Ford Model A Rumble Seat Roadster displays a
sharp exterior that has been carefully maintained. The classic
Olive Drab and Black paint job shows excellent depth across the
body panels and fenders. The straw-colored spoke wheels contrast
well against the body color, with wide whitewall tires giving it
proper road presence. A tan canvas convertible top folds neatly
behind the cabin, and the running boards feature good rubber
covering. This Model A is well accessorized, with a grill guard,
Flying Quail hood ornament, etched wing windows, dual side-mount
tires with mirrors, luggage rack, manual drivers-side wiper, and
whitewall tires.
The brown vinyl interior presents clean, functional simplicity. The
bench seat provides good support with the floor shifter positioned
for easy access. The dash is painted to match the exterior,
creating visual continuity throughout the vehicle. Brown door
panels match the seating surfaces, maintaining a cohesive look
across all interior components. A beveled rear-view mirror offers
necessary visibility for safe driving. The carpet shows good
condition throughout the cabin floor.
The 201 CI 4-cylinder engine connects to a 3-speed manual
transmission for authentic Model A performance with a clean engine
bay showing evidence of proper maintenance. An upgrade to an
alternator helps insure reliability. Mechanical drum brakes handle
stopping duties from all four corners and the front suspension uses
a mono leaf spring while the rear employs a traditional leaf spring
setup. The factory rear end maintains correct specifications and
the exhaust provides the only soundtrack you need.
