"100,000 miles? That's nothing! I've driven my Dodge 281,000 miles,
says Fred Capron, Spokane, Washington. Dodge owners from coast to
coast report sensational mileage from Dodge cars. For 22 years the
words 'Dodge' and 'Dependability' have been synonymous, and no
wonder, from all parts of the country come reports Dodge cars have
been driven nine, twelve, fourteen, sixteen years!" From a 1936
print ad.
For consignment, a 1936 Dodge Pickup with a title verified 76,662
actual miles although that may be contested as the odometer is
inoperable. This is a street rodded version that's been chopped,
channeled, sprayed with satin black and silver pearl, and even
appeared in the May 2007 issue of Custom Classic Trucks
magazine!
Exterior
Well yes, it's a truck, but sits lower than your Miata with its
channeled stance and rear wheels riding outside of the bed rather
than under it. Speaking of wheels, these are 16-inch SoCal Lakester
wheels looking a bit like magnesium and if you're going to have a
bad boy rod, you better include knock offs, and this truck does.
This all steel truck now features a grille from a '34 Ford and a
hood ornament from a '33 Dodge Ram, here in red which is a
fantastic complement to the red pinstriping on the grille surround
and body of the truck, coupled with silver striping and the
matching door graphics. The tail lights are 1959 style bullets and
the tailgate has been reconfigured so it still operates while
accented with more striping and graphics. The super narrow windows
are a product of the chop and have the intimidating profile of gun
turrets with the rear window barely a slit. Beautiful wood in the
bed completes this stunner in satin black and the only imperfection
is one area of some uneven filler.
Interior
Your retinas will wake up when you open the door to find bright red
on the inside, starting with the door panels with a pleated design
and an attractive metal spear trim on top of the panel. From there,
it's a red bench with silver piping and it sits low to the floor
and presents in excellent condition. It's red on red up front too
where the steering wheel leads to the painted dash with gold rimmed
gauges and a pinstripe flourish on the glove box behind which is a
Bluetooth stereo. The 410 gauge shotgun shifter is epic, and
pointed to the floor, for safety of course. There we find red loop
carpet and speakers tucked up behind the dash, and the headliner
keeps the theme with smooth red vinyl.
Drivetrain
The engine is exposed, and technically part of the exterior, and
what a beauty! This is a 270ci Red Ram Hemi V8 from 1955 with three
2-barrel carburetors over an Offenhauser intake, and each is topped
with a velocity stack. Clean metals make up the powerplant accented
with red wires and coated headers. It's mated to a TH350 3-speed
automatic and power is routed to the Ford 8" in back.
Undercarriage
Absolutely clean underneath and looks like a fresh build. There are
a few drops of oil on the pan but beyond that, not much to report.
The exhaust comes from the headers and goes straight pipe, exiting
in front of each back wheel. Suspension consists of a polished 4
bar up front and leaf springs in the back while power brakes are
onboard as very visible, red calipered discs up front and drums in
the back.
Drive-Ability
It's not about being limber, it's more about technique But once in,
it's as comfortable as can be with legs running parallel with the
floor. The V8 makes a raucous announcement of ignition and if the
stance doesn't get you attention, the sound certainly will. She
tracks straight and low, and handles well around turns. Yes, we
could get used to this! We note the speedometer, odometer, horn and
brake lights not working but all other functions afforded this bad
boy work as they should. While Classic Auto Mall represents that
these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we
cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of
your purchase.
As they say, "you couldn't build it for this price". This is an
outstanding build, ready for show and go, and just big enough to
tuck into your garage or warehouse comfortably. This is Jesse James
level badness and an absolute show stopper that's practically
turnkey. Find a new low with this 1936 Dodge street rod pickup.
