While there is something to be said for an original car, sometimes
when we come across a nicely-restored car that utilizes a bit of
modern technology, it's hard to argue that the marriage of past and
present isn't a better package. Such is the case with this 1968
Chevrolet Camaro SS 454 Tribute. Fully repainted in a Royal Blue
with a complementary black hood stripe, this first-gen Camaro may
not have been born an SS, but it certainly lives up to the Super
Sport ethos in more ways than one.
Inside, we find a fully restored black vinyl interior. Laid out in
factory-correct fashion, this interior has been updated with a
color change to better match the head-turning exterior. A center
console separates a pair of bucket seats, while a padded Grant GT
steering wheel sits directly ahead of an aftermarket Autometer
8,000 rpm tachometer mounted to the steering column. A pair of
auxiliary gauges sits under the dashboard, joined by a kill switch.
Sliding HVAC controls keep things simple, while a Pioneer
AM/FM/Cassette player provides more soundtrack options than the
original unit it replaces.
Under the hood, we find a massive 454 cubic-inch overhead valve V-8
engine. Stock heads get Mickey Thompson valve covers, while a
single four-barrel Demon carburetor feeds into a Winter's intake
manifold. Spent gases are expelled through a set of long-tube
Hooker headers before exiting through a pair of sweet-sounding
FlowMaster mufflers. Power is routed through a five-speed manual
transmission before being sent to the 12-bolt rear end, which
transfers those ponies to the pavement via a set of polished
18-inch Coys shod in wide 275/40ZR-18 Sumitomo rubber. At the same
time, a staggered set of 17-inch wheels is wrapped in narrower
235/45ZR-17 tires, giving this restomod a proper muscle car stance
from any angle.
