GR Auto Gallery is excited to present this 1965 Triumph TR4A
finished in classic British Racing Green with a black soft top over
a black leather interior. Designed by Giovanni Michelotti, the TR4A
carried forward the sharp Italian-influenced styling of the TR4
with clean lines, flared arches, and bright chrome bumpers, while
adding subtle refinements that made it a more livable roadster.
Wire wheels, chrome trim, and a proper convertible top complete the
look, giving this Triumph the balance of elegance and sport that
made it stand out in its era.
Power comes from the 2138cc inline-four paired with a 4-speed
manual gearbox, delivering the spirited and mechanical driving
experience that British sports cars are known for. What set the
TR4A apart mechanically was its introduction of independent rear
suspension on most models, a major step forward from the solid axle
of the earlier TR4. This upgrade gave the car improved comfort and
far more composed handling over uneven roads, making it not only
fun but also surprisingly capable as a touring car.
Inside, the TR4A kept to Triumph's straightforward approach, with
purposeful black leather seating and a wooden dashboard veneer
housing Smiths gauges for oil, temp, fuel, and amps. Roll-up
windows, white sun visors, and an AM radio made it feel more
civilized than its predecessors, particularly when compared to the
side curtains of the TR3. The cabin was spartan but functional,
with just enough refinement to make open-air motoring more
enjoyable without losing the raw connection to the road.
Produced from 1965 through 1967, about 28,000 TR4As were built, but
survivors today remain relatively scarce compared to contemporaries
like the MGB. Collectors value them for their unique place in
Triumph's lineage, bridging the gap between the earlier raw
roadsters and the more refined TR6. This example embodies that
balance of old-world charm and new-world usability, making it an
especially appealing choice for those seeking a classic British
roadster that is both fun to drive and rewarding to own.
