"Plymouth's 1959 cars were stylish and once again quite new, based
upon the 1957-1958 body shells, albeit with a reskin. In a bid to
win, the newly top of the top line Sport Fury finally added a drop
top version to the fold. In fact, the new Sport Fury still had the
318ci V8, (now with 260 hp), standard, front swivel bucket seats,
and a larger optional, (carburetor only), 361ci Golden Commando V8
of 305 hp but with more torque." Hagerty.com
For consignment, a 1959 Plymouth Fury 2 door hardtop showing 75,730
miles, but the true miles are unknown. There's no getting around
it, whenever we have a red 50's Fury on our showroom floor,
everyone comments about a certain movie car which has made the
model iconic beyond it's incredible period styling and 50's era
attributes. Like orange Dodge Chargers, it has also made them
desirable.
Exterior
Who knows how many gallons of Flame Red paint into covering this
enormous car and its enormous fins, but likely a lot! Also, because
'59 is still in the 50's, two tone was still a thing so Iceberg
White colors the roof and the side trim detail with polished
borders that bisect the slab red panels. In profile, it's nothing
short of a monstrous jet with a pillarless fuselage, sloping rear
window, and high rooster tail fins. The front fenders conform to
the shape of the dual headlights, dipping in the middle creating a
body line that flows back to the side mirrors while the eggcrate
grille runs the width of the car over a robust chrome bumper and
all is in excellent condition. 14-inch wheels are dressed with bold
wheel coverings and wrapped in 75 series white wall tires.
Imperfections include some uneven filler on the rockers and lower
panels.
Interior
What's black and white and red all over? This Fury, of course, with
its iconic 50's sandwiching of black, gray, and white vinyl,
beginning on the door panels and continuing with houndstooth
inserts on the black vinyl split bench and rear bench seats. We
note some seam separation on the uppers and other than that, all
seats are in fantastic shape. Wishbone shaped spokes line the
steering wheel leading to the gray dash, a combination of painted
metal and stitched vinyl framing with a space age instrument
cluster flanked by two columns of push button controls for gears
and vents with some dressy aluminum plating behind it. On the mid
panel, an AM radio and clock reside along with the glove box
retraining the jewel like design that runs side to side. Black loop
carpet on the floor, a light colored headliner above showing some
marks, and an unlined trunk holding the fender skirts complete our
tour of the interior, which shows wisps of patina but is show
worthy as it stands.
Drivetrain
The engine is not quite ready for show as it presents in driver
quality. It's the 318ci Poly V8 putting out 230 horsepower with a
2-barrel carburetor. Behind it is a TorqueFlite 3-speed automatic
transmission sending power way back to the rear axle with 2.93
gearing.
Undercarriage
Driver quality here as well with typical surface rust, a few red
drops on the transmission pan, and some notable rust on inner
panels and body braces, along with several previous repairs.
Meanwhile, the dual exhaust runs through stock style mufflers and
exits through straight, chrome pipes out back. Drum brakes are
front and rear and suspension consists of torsion bar up front and
leaf springs in back.
Drive-Ability
The 318 comes to life not on its own, but with a pump of the gas
and a turn of the key. It carries this big car onto the tarmac
after we push the D button and the car rolls merrily along where we
point it. It idles smoothly and tracks straight and we note a few
things not working along the way. That includes the clock, radio,
horn, and reverse lights. All other functions operate as intended.
While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were
working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these
functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
This is an intersectional car. It appeals to anyone who loves
iconic and a bit over the top 50's styling. People who appreciate
the aeronautical influence on cars will love the Fury. Of course,
devotees to a particular horror film will immediately relate with
this cherry hued Plymouth. Even without Hollywood's influence, the
50's Furys are dramatic cars that will surely turn heads wherever
they are seen, even if that's just sitting in your garage.
