In mid February 1968, the California Ford dealers began to market a
factory built, limited edition Mustang called the GT/CS, or
"California Special". It was born out of the need to spark interest
in the model as the pony car craze began to blossom and when the
Southern California sales manager saw the 1967 Shelby GT500 dubbed
"Little Red" it sparked an idea for a special model that would
appeal to Californians. The GT/CS was developed alongside the '68
Shelbys and in the end, 4,118 were produced.
For consignment, a 1968 Ford Mustang GT California special coupe
with a title verified 115,261 actual miles. It was stripped to bare
metal before being repainted and has been the recipient of two AACA
Senior awards. It will come to you with the custom Marti Report and
a 2001 letter from Ford verifying original specifications.
Exterior
Ford's special hue of green known as Lime Gold glistens with a two
stage application on this car and is augmented with white GT/CS
striping decals that travels the midline and terminates on the rear
side scoops and also lines the back end of the rear spoiler. In
front, square fog lights with polished trim live in the horseless
blacked out grille while a pair of hood pins and Shelby style hood
vents decorate the top surface. Both chrome bumpers are in great
shape and the rest of the metalwork is very nice as well. Our
notchback has a California Special script emblem on each rear
quarter panel along with Shelby style tail lights flanking a pop
off gas cap and reverse lights are round units housed on the rear
valance. 14-inch Styled Steel wheels retain the GT center caps and
this caps off a stunning presentation of this fairly rare
Mustang.
Interior
The door panels are handsomely constructed and clean, with stitch
patterned vinyl inserts and a courtesy light that tucks cleverly
behind the ribbed lower trim. Textured grain vinyl fills the bucket
seats, surrounded by smooth black sides with the rear seats
reflecting the same excellent condition and materials. The sport
steering wheel leads to the clean dashboard with essential gauges,
toggle switches, and an AM radio over storage compartment in the
center stack. The T-shifter is accented by colored plastic gear
indicators, all contained within the black vinyl console over black
loop carpet and Mustang branded rubber mats. The headliner is in
great shape and so is the overhead console which houses a pair of
map lights. In the trunk, a period plaid vinyl mat keeps things
clean and houses a styled steel spare.
Drivetrain
At some point, the engine, transmission, and rear were removed and
serviced and now present cleanly beginning with the 302ci V8 under
the hood, with a 4-barrel carb and 230 horsepower. It appears in
factory form with a vintage style battery and even old style
clamps. It's backed by a C4 3-speed automatic transmission that
sends power to the Ford 8" axle with 3.00 conventional gears. The
car has a newer radiator along with belts and hoses and the A/C
compressor is set up for R134.
Undercarriage
Super clean underneath with red oxide primer being the dominant
color and no surface rust is seen. Other than some oil sling from
the rear U-joint and a single drop of oil on the pan, no errant
fluids are seen. Dual exhaust flows to a single stock style muffler
in back which emits two exhaust pipes that terminate at polished
splitters. Power brakes are onboard as front disc and rear drum
while suspension is composed of coil springs up front and leaf
springs in the back.
Drive-Ability
It's smooth sailing for the well sorted 302 an the car performs
flawlessly on the test loop with all functions onboard operating
just as they should. The car is quick enough, tracks straight and
handles well, which will all come in handy as you make your way to
the podium! While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions
were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee
these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
For the discerning Mustang collector, this California Special is a
past AACA winner and likely has other wins in its future as the
restoration still appears fresh and the car needs nothing. If
you're in the market for a classic Mustang but wanted something
just a bit more special, look no further than this GT/CS.
