"It's a feast for the eyes, this big, beautiful, budget priced
Buick Special for 1953. All the swift, clean lines of the Golden
Anniversary Buick styling are here. All the distinctive dash of
silvery sweep spears and fender ports is very much in evidence. All
the wide visibility of sweeping glass areas and the rich touches of
fine fabrics and fittings are here to please the most
discriminating tastes. But beneath this cloak of beauty is a
combination of features that produce the most sensational
performance in Buick Special history." From the '53 Buick Sales
Brochure
For consignment, a 1953 Buick Special DeLuxe 2 door sedan with a
title verified 90,399 actual miles. This was the recipient of an
older frame off restoration and in the past year, has been brought
up to par with a new clutch, rebuilt speedometer and clock.
Exterior
With its smiling toothy grille sporting more chrome than the
Chicago bean sculpture, it's all dressed up in two tone Terrace
Green over Ridge Green, the long roof beautifully accented in the
darker of the two greens, and both in two stage sheen. The fenders
sit below the bulbous hood and trunk and in front, run parallel to
the machete shaped body trim that swings southward the polished
rocker panel. But the highlight of the profile may just be the
legendary fender ventiports. In back, the stacked double tail
lights with a third small circle between them are endlessly simple
and cool and cut right into the bodywork as opposed to being housed
in an assembly. In front, the droopy eyed look of the headlights is
made possible by the elongated bezel that collects the smaller
marker light like a teardrop. The torpedo hood ornament is also
sculpted into the hood's nose, not perched on top of it in a rather
complex bit of artful engineering. 15-inch wheels with proper
covers carry Coker white walls. The paint and metalwork are
fantastic with one note of a paint run under a door as the only
imperfection.
Interior
Three shades of green and three distinct material patterns
including pleated vinyl cover both doors handsomely. The split
bench combines medium and light colors with both cloth and vinyl
construction and dark green piping. In back, the bench mirrors the
colors and configuration and all are in excellent condition. The
black banjo style steering wheel is incredibly classic with a brass
era Buick embossed on the center cap as a nice little Easter egg.
Up front, glossy green paint and metal faceplates present an artful
dashboard and even the gauges have detail with raised digits behind
glass windows. The center stacks labeled knobs at each end of the
speaker in a style that rivals juke boxes and presents cleanly.
Green looped cloth covers the floor along with clear rubber mats, a
soft green headliner looms cleanly overhead, and the trunk is fully
covered with a vinyl mat and is ready for show.
Drivetrain
A yellow insulator pad hovers over the spotless 263ci Fireball
inline 8 cylinder with a 2-barrel carburetor and 125 horses. A
3-speed manual sends power to the rear axle with 3.90 gears. The
car runs on a 6 volt system however a 12 volt adapter is included
to charge your phone.
Undercarriage
More clean conditions are found under the car where a single
exhaust flows through a stock style muffler and exits out back
dressed up with a chrome deflector. Drum brakes are front and rear
and suspension consists of coil springs up front and a 3 link with
coil springs in the back. We note a touch of residual oil on the
pans and on the rear differential as well. Uniformly black with no
surface rust, we do note some former flaking rust on an inner
rocker that appears to be fully encapsulated and not spreading.
Drive-Ability
This is the kind of early land yacht that is good at smoothing
rough waters. That is to say the car delivers an even, smooth, and
comfortable ride and although you won't win any drag races today,
back in '53 125 horsepower wasn't too shabby! The inside is
cavernous with leg and head room for miles. We note the clock and
heater blower are not working but all other functions work as they
should. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions
were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee
these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
Overall, a beautiful example, smooth driver, and all buttoned up
visually. A super car that harkens back to an era when Detroit
built them, your status in society reflected in them, and size
mattered. Whether you're a fan of Buick or a fan of the period,
this '53 giant of a car is sure to please. It needs nothing other
than a new garage.
