We here at Cruisin Classics are excited to present to you this
stunning 1968 Plymouth Road Runner. This first-year Road Runner is
a very rare find with only 60,764 actual miles, all original sheet
metal, and a numbers-matching engine, transmission, and rear axle!
Additionally, this car comes with the original Broadcast Sheet, the
original window sticker, the original registration, a copy of the
original title (as well as several other titles throughout the
car's life), and the original owner's manual with Certicard. On top
of all that, this car has obviously been stored in a
temperature-controlled indoor environment its whole life, and its
condition is a testament to a life of excellent care and treatment.
This Road Runner comes to us today dressed with a high-quality
respray of its original color - Silver Haze (AA1). The paint color
looks spectacular on the car with only a few touch-ups and
minuscule imperfections. Up front, you'll find a black grille
flanked by dual side-by-side round headlights, all framed with
bright trim. Beneath is a gleaming chrome bumper with integrated
turn signals. The hood features dual faux vents with "383"
call-outs on each side that let you know that there's a stout V-8
hiding beneath. The side view reveals quite a bit of quality chrome
and brightwork, including windshield trim, drip rail molding,
window trim, (optional) belt molding on the doors and rear
quarters, door handles, and driver's side mirror. Both doors
feature correct "road runner" badging and bird decals. If you look
closely, you'll see that the bird decals are black and white - they
didn't become colorized until the 1969 model year. Being an early
'68 model produced at the end of October 1967, this car is a
two-door pillared coupe (B-pillar present) with pop-out rear
quarter windows. Hardtop coupes were not offered until later
production of the '68 model run. Around back, you'll see bright
taillight surrounds, correct "PLYMOUTH" and "road runner" badging,
a rear bumper just as nice as the one up front, and dual
oval-shaped chrome exhaust tips. The gas fill is hidden behind the
rear license plate. This gorgeous Mopar rolls down the road on a
set of 15" OEM steel wheels with dog-dish caps, all wrapped in BF
Goodrich Silvertown Redline Radials that complete the cool look.
Being a 1968, this car has Shipping Order (SO) number stamps on the
core support and on the driver's side trunk gutter under the
weatherstrip that match the Broadcast Sheet. There is also a U1
code on the fender tag and the Broadcast Sheet denoting this as a
"special order" car of the Belvedere line.
Lift the hood to discover an exceptionally clean and stock engine
bay with the original 383ci V-8 at the center. The last 8 digits of
the VIN are stamped on the rear of the bellhousing area near the
oil sending unit, proving the engine is a match with the car. The
engine, heads, valve covers, water pump, and intake are all covered
in a nice coat of Chrysler Turquoise paint. Atop the intake is an
Edelbrock 600 4-barrel carburetor topped off with a black air
cleaner with a "383 road runner engine" decal. The original
4-barrel Carter carburetor is in a box in the trunk. Other
highlights include 906 iron heads, Chrysler points-type ignition,
the original 22" radiator with shroud, and a correct group 27 Mopar
battery. Steering is manual, and brakes are 4-wheel manual drums.
The 383 is mated up to the original 727 Torqueflight 3-speed
automatic transmission (also #'s matching) that sends power to the
rear wheels via the original 8 3/4" Chrysler rear axle with 3.23
posi gears. The rear axle boasts both the "Sure-Grip Differential"
tag and a tag with the gear ratio stamped on it. Exhaust flows from
immaculately clean cast manifolds through "Hemi"-type mufflers and
exits the chrome tips in the rear with a pleasing rumble.
Swing open the driver's door, and the dome light pops on to
illuminate a largely original black interior. The black painted
doors are outfitted with OEM Pewter vinyl panels with bright trim,
armrests, and window cranks. The same Pewter vinyl graces the rear
side panels as well. Being a '68 automatic, this Road Runner was
originally a bench seat column shift car. One of the car's owners
decided to change to bucket seats with a console shift and did a
thorough job. The Procar black vinyl buckets they chose are
comfortable and good-looking, and the console appears to be from a
'68 Satellite or GTX. They even went so far as to change the
steering column so that no hint of the column shift remains. We do
have the original bench seat and linkage from the original shifter,
and they come with the car. The rear seat looks original, and it
doesn't look like anyone has ever sat in it. The rear package tray
is original and uncut, and the headliner is tight grey perforated
vinyl in good condition. The floor is covered in nice black hook &
loop carpet that's kept nice with a set of carpeted logo floormats.
Ahead of the driver is an OEM 3-spoke black steering wheel with a
silver Plymouth logo horn button that produces the signature Road
Runner "Beep-Beep" sound. The black dash is topped with a
crack-free vinyl pad, and the working heat & fan controls are
mounted underneath the pad at the center. In the dash are original
working gauges - alt, gas, temp, 120mph speedometer, and 8K
tachometer. Mileage on the odometer is 60,764, and those are actual
miles per the title. Beneath the gauges are controls for the
working wipers and lights, and in the center of the dash is the
original Plymouth solid-state AM push-button radio that plays your
cruisin' music through a speaker atop the dash. Mounted under the
dash is a trio of Sunpro gauges that help you keep a tight eye on
volts, temp, and oil pressure. Ahead of the passenger is a "road
runner" badge and bird decal that sit above a flip-up door
glovebox. Around back, you'll find a very clean trunk with a plaid
vinyl mat, full matching spare & factory jack, and some spare parts
(original carb, shift linkage, etc.).
If you're on the hunt for an exceptionally well-documented,
all-numbers-matching Road Runner, then your search ends here with
this awesome '68! On top of its originality and documentation, this
Road Runner is a fantastic driving car out on the road, and it's
sure to put a smile on your face every time you get behind the
wheel! Cars like this just don't come around very often, and you'd
do well to seize this rare opportunity to put this incredible Mopar
