Here's a vehicle that looks like it came straight out of an
old-school gangster movie. This 1948 Chevrolet Fleetmaster has all
the right curves in all the right places. The shiny molding,
hubcaps, and chrome bumpers come to life when paired with the
Mayland Black paint job. The body lines and gaps are consistent,
and the doors and windows open properly. There's no other way to
say it: this is a pure cruising, car show queen. And let's not
forget its size-you can easily fit a family of six in this car with
plenty of shoulder and elbow room for everyone.
The interior is very clean, with tan seats and door panels accented
by elegant brown trim on the upper door panels and across the
dashboard. The dashboard and steering wheel appear mostly original,
and although it's a stick-shift, this Chevy still uses a
column-mounted shifter. The radio and gauges look original and
remain in good shape, as do the carpet and headliner. Needless to
say, this is a very nice, original-looking interior from a vehicle
that was built in the late 1940s.
The engine bay of this Fleetmaster is stock-configured. Everything
seems to be in place and where it belongs. Power comes from a
216-cubic-inch Inline-6 with a single-barrel carburetor, paired
with a 3-speed manual transmission. The rear end is a standard GM
unit with leaf springs, while the front suspension features coil
springs, shocks, and a sway bar. This big Chevy rides on 16-inch
wheels with 6.00-16 tires, with a matching spare in the back.
