"Mach 1, pronounced Mach Won! Winning is a habit with Mach 1. The
latest triumph is the top rally award a car can win on this
continent, the SCCA Manufacturers Rally Championship for 1969. For
'70 the Mach 1 looks as good as it goes. There's a unique black
grille with special sports lamps, matte black hood, aluminum rocker
panels, high back buckets, full instrumentation, wood toned panel
and console, electric clock, and more. Get yourself a Mach 1 and
really "shake up" the troops." From a 1970 print ad.
For consignment, a 1970 Ford Mustang Mach 1 showing 13,775 miles,
but the true miles are unknown. This is a nice example with a
numbers matching 351ci Cleveland under the hood and spectacular
blue paint. Be sure to read fast and call quickly on this one as
it's already stopped people in their tracks in the short time we've
had it.
Exterior
Two stage Diamond Blue paint was applied by the previous owners who
owned the car since the 70's. This may be subjective, but we think
it's a fantastic color for the car and a fantastic counter to other
black trim that includes, of course, the hood stripe, shaker hood,
grille, gill inserts, wing, louvers, and rear fascia. Let's not
forget about that ribbed rocker panel that contains the magical
word in lowercase letters, Mach 1. 351 is included on the hood
stripe leaving no doubt what's shaking that shaker unit coming
through the hood. This car wears 18-inch Foose wheels and our
consignor says an additional set of wheels comes with the car. The
paint and metalwork is very nice and the only imperfection is some
peeling paint from the taillight bezels.
Interior
A narrow courtesy light lives under the woodgrain insert in the
door panels which are mostly smooth and black vinyl with carpeted
lowers. Textured vinyl makes up the tuck and roll inserts of the
bucket seats as well as the fold down rear seats. Other than some
compression, a small tear and some wear on the driver's seat, no
other issues with the remaining seats could be found. Black carpet
shows well on the flat panels that lay horizontally when the rear
seats are folded and the remaining loop style carpet in the car is
also nice. There's a crack and patina on the steering wheel rim but
don't let that stop you from moving forward. The gauges are
embedded in the woodgrain faceplate and show a touch of age while a
clock lives in front of the passenger, also framed in wood along
with the coveted Mach 1 plate. Occupying the center is an AM/FM
radio, vent levers, and the fantastic Hurst shifter rising and
ready for action. The black headliner is perfect and the trunk is
lined with a plaid mat that also covers the spare tire.
Drivetrain
Ford Blue covers the valve covers on this driver quality but clean
and numbers matching 351ci Cleveland V8 with a 4-barrel carburetor
under the air cleaner and a rating of a monstrous 300 horsepower.
It is mated to a Toploader 4-speed manual transmission that sends
power to the legendary Ford 9" rear.
Undercarriage
Driver quality conditions underneath with the typical surface rust
along with area of flaking rust or actual rust through on panels
and body braces. We note invasive rust in the area around the front
torque boxes as well as at the base of both shock towers. There's
some sling evident from the rear U-joint and residual oil on the
pan up front. The dual exhaust flows through stock style mufflers
and exit through square, polished tips that fit the cutouts in the
rear valance. Suspension consists of coil springs and leaf springs,
front and back, respectively. Brakes are discs up front and drums
in the back.
Drive-Ability
We take our seat in the fastback and take a lap on the loop to find
the 351 running very well and the tires, which are no older than
late 2019, sticking to the road and helping with handling of this
grand touring performer. The shifter is a blast to work and brings
back all the feeling of vintage driving and of course, the shaking
Shaker is beyond epic. Meanwhile, in terms of functionality, we
note the clock is not working and the horn clicks but does not
honk. Outside of that, all functions operate as normal. While
Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at
the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions
will be working at the time of your purchase.
Stunning color, numbers matching engine, low ownership. Heck, even
the Foose wheels look good! More than 40,000 Mach 1 Mustangs were
made in 1970 and we're thrilled to have another one in the halls of
the mall. Come get a closer look at this one before it leaves at
the speed of sound, that's Mach 1 for those wondering.
