For Sale: 1965 Rambler Marlin in Morgantown, Pennsylvania

Vehicle Description

1965 Rambler Marlin Fastback

The original concept for the Marlin came in the aerodynamic form of the Rambler Tarpon that debuted at the 1964 Chicago Auto Show, where Richard Teague's design marked a radical departure from the normally conservative look of Rambler's and AMC's offerings. The most striking feature is the sloped fastback roofline that terminates at the rear bumper. That long aerodynamic teardrop shape harkened back to mid century designs like AMC's predecessor, the Nash Airflyte.

For consignment, a 1965 Rambler Marlin fastback with a title verified 91,521 actual miles. This has a fresh restoration including new leather on the interior, a rebuilt engine, and of course, new paint!

Exterior
Easily one of the most unique and recognizable designs in the classic car world, the slope back of the back between flat topped fenders is further accentuated by the elongated stretch of the torpedo shaped rear side windows. They themselves are highlighted by a strip of black paint which calls back the trimmed black middle section, roof and hood of the car. Two stage Antigua Red covers the rest of the car with eye-catching brightness with contrasting and restored polished trim that runs along the straight shoulder line, at the wheel openings, and surrounding the windows. Wonderfully simple contouring tail lights run parallel with the chrome bumper below and chrome exhaust tips protrude for a pleasing and symmetrical presentation. Headlights bulge from the finely striated grille and another straight chrome bumper underscores the dramatic fascia. Imperfections include areas of orange peel finish, paint runs, and some scuff like intrusion.

Interior
Red stitching highlights the vibrantly designed door panels with turned aluminum trim inside black leather panels and both doors are clean. That red stitching on the pleats continues on the tuck and roll of the front bucket seats with extra contrast provided by the bright red piping around the black leather seats, with the pattern and quality mirrored on the rear 2+2 and sidewalls. It's all very clean and very sharp. The fine black steering wheel includes a horn ring and polished stalks ahead of the two gauge dashboard with metal knobs along the turned mid panel. An AM radio and analog clock are also present for your driving pleasure. The new black carpet is just about flawless and the barren trunk with spare has plenty of extra room.

Drivetrain
Our show ready engine bay holds a rebuilt 287ci V8, rated at 198 horsepower and fueled with a 2-barrel carburetor. The blue engine catches your eye along with the uniquely slanted valve covers. Behind it, a Flash-O-Matic 3-speed automatic transmission sending power to the rear axle with 2.87 gears.

Undercarriage
Very clean and simple underneath with newer exhaust flowing through Xlerator mufflers before looping over the rear axle and out the back. Suspension here is coil springs up front and out back with a 3 link system. Power brakes are onboard with discs in front and drums in the back behind the 15-inch American Racing Daisy wheels.

Drive-Ability
A Marlin is a very fast fish and it's likely this car is no slouch either. We fire up the V8 and swim out to the test loop where this red and black beauty performs as well as you would want with decent power and straight tracking and an interior that is both attractive and 60's simple. We note the wipers and radio are not working but all other functions available operate as they should. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.

Of the 10,000 Marlins produced in 1965, less than half were equipped with V8's and along with this car's bright restoration and uncommon appearance here at the mall, this wildly unique car is one to consider. The streamlined body of the Marlin fish helps make it one of the strongest swimmers in the sea and we think the shape of this car makes it a strong buy in the world of classic cars. Jump in, the water's great!
