"The first automotives to have turbochargers were trucks with the
first prototypes being made around 1938. The first turbocharged
passenger cars did not appear until the 60's, and even then they
were still very unreliable. In the 70's, turbocharging became very
popular for Formula 1 racing, and even today this is still the
image that many people have about turbochargers. However, the oil
crisis in the 70's also brought on a new awareness of fuel
reduction. Downsizing by the means of turbocharging provided a
great opportunity for cleaner engines, without losing power."

For consignment, a 1979 Chevrolet Corvette coupe showing 27,150
miles, but the true miles are unknown. This car has a numbers
matching drivetrain and received a turbocharger early in life,
along with some body modifications that help it stand out. In the
early 80's, the car was awarded top ranking for modified Corvettes
at Concours d'Elegance events.

Exterior
Walking by this Corvette, it takes about half a second to notice
the exterior mods with a Greenwood hood that contains aggressive
NACA ducts, a rising cowl, and an intimidating row of vents. Out
back, a larger rear wing veers from stock configuration and TURBO
appears on the back of the wing, repeated on the front fenders,
clearly seen over the Silver Metallic paint that adorns the coke
bottle body. Knock off caps denote the only other exterior
modification on this classic Vette and it retains its
characteristic quad tail lights, chin spoiler, and T-tops. The
paint and trim are in great shape with the only imperfections being
some cracking of the paint near a key hole and flex cracking and
peeling of paint on the chin spoiler.
Interior
We expected black and we went blue! Beginning on the door panels,
deep, dark blue starts the consistent palette and including their
carpeted lowers, both doors are in great shape. Onto the blue
leather bucket seats we go and find them in nice condition as well,
with some typical light wrinkling as proof someone occupied them on
occasion, but fully intact. Ahead of the nice steering wheel is a
clean instrument cluster with two gauges while the aircraft array
is positioned in the center and in an area that usually shows
patina, these present very nicely. An AM/FM radio and A/C panel
stack next, finally flowing to the shifter in a clean faceplate and
black boot. Plush blue carpet is protected by matching mats and the
carpet also covers the rear cargo area and remains in very nice
condition.
Drivetrain
Plenty of polished parts help dress up the bay where the numbers
matching 350ci L48 V8 resides with a RaJay Industries Turbo kit
which boosts power from 175 to an impressive 300 horses! It's mated
to its numbers matching T10 4-speed manual transmission that routes
power to the rear axle with 3.36 gears and Positraction.
Undercarriage
Original looking and showing age with typical surface rust, the
underside reveals an exhaust that splits, then enters original
equipment mufflers stamped with L48, then immediately exiting
through small tips under the car. There is no catalytic converter
present. Four wheel power disc brakes are onboard and benefit from
a new master cylinder installed in 2025. Independent front
suspension softened by coil springs while the rear has a multi link
independent suspension with tubular axle drive shafts, transverse
strut rods, torque control arms and a mono transverse leaf
spring.
Drive-Ability
We enter the excellent interior and start this Chevy and roll the
cowl hooded beast onto the test loop where the turbo goes to work
on long straight aways. Our tires are 16 years old so we're not
going all out in this car, but it clearly has more power than a
stock '79, and all the handling these cars are known for. We note
the horn and A/C are not working but all other functions provided
to the driver do operate. While Classic Auto Mall represents that
these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we
cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of
your purchase.
You can tell this car has been stored in a climate controlled
garage as it remains in great condition. It will come to you with
the original hood and some of the original parts if the mods don't
suit your taste. We think it's a standout without being burdened by
a full body kit and if you enjoy boosted V8's, take a sip of this
sleek silver Vette.
